Fuel access/ Florida bound
Has anyone from the north headed south from upper NY or Ont traveling 81S to 64 over to 95S.
Looking for fuel stops that are easily accessable from the interstate and large enough to handle 13' clearances.
Just wondering out loud if anyone who makes this trip regularly has there favorite places to stop without chasing diesel ?

New York - Florida
Not sure of your specific travel requirements considering time and all.... However, 95S can be pretty frustrating at times, near D.C. it's now the most congested travel area in the States, don't I know it... I work over there in N. Virginia. If your travel allows, it just might be a better trip staying on 81, then cutting over east from a number of different paths available. One that comes to mind is 81 to 66, then 17 to Fredricksburg. We take some of this route every year while traveling to Myrtle Beach. Another similar is 81 to I believe 64, this goes through Charlottesville and on to Richmond and 95. This west swing will obviously add miles to the trip, however relieves one of the D.C. area congestion. Just a suggestion, and btw, you won't have any problems with obtaining diesel or clearance on either 81 or 95 that I have found, plenty of truck stops everywhere, this is the major N - S trucking corridor.

i travel I81 from NY to MD, all the time. there are several stops along that interstate that will easy accomodate you. they are redoing a lot of the interchanges so watch your exits closely. if you can make it down past the I 78 split, it turns into a more populated area. from about exit 90ish till NY it is mostly mountains and hills to climb, going south is much easier. not many exits with services after scranton, and the ones that are there are usually several miles from the interstate. but a nice drive. good luck. i have been 81 clear into WV, but only a few times. all i can remeber is the 75MPH speed limits

We travel I95 from Jersey to FL every year. We leave New Jersey around 9pm Fri. and avoid the traffic around DC that way. They have become a little pricey but we still use. FlyingJ for fuel. They have dedicated RV islands and are spaced well for our needs. (Between 250 and 350 mi.) They claim that since their buyout of FJ some of the Pilots are adding RV lanes but I have not seen this. Hope this helps. Travel safely, Hank

LittleJoe, Howdy;
If you don't mind fantastic scenery and at the same time avoid most of the trauma of mountain travel, all the while totally avoiding major traffic congestion. I would;
Stay on I-81S till you hit I-77S (South of Roanoke, Va.), that has you traveling the Shenandoah Valley (you will be traveling paralell [rolling hills], with the mountains not crosswise [ups-n-downs] more fuel efficient). Stay on I-77S till you get to Columbia, S. C. then jump onto I-26S to I-95S.
Not so much 'white-knuckle' more 'laid-back', as with all Inter-States ample truck stops and 'other' places to get fuel, fun stops (Rock Mount, N.C. aka
Mayberry is just off the highway just after you cross into N.C. from Va.).
That is the way I'd go if I wasn't crushed for time...

PS. Please say Howdy to Pa, Adam, & Hoss for me.... :-)

Will check that route out Hankeye.
We normally go 81S to 64 across to 95S but that was always without trailer, and you dont pay as much attention to fuel stops.
We went this route last year with a 30' TT and just seemed to be out of sync with easily accessible fuel stops that were right on the hwy and ended up wasting a lot of time.
The above route put us in Zephyrhills Fl in 26hrs. Plan to run 100kph this time instead of 110kph in the name of fuel economy with the heavier trailer.

Ahhh, shucks, what's a few k/hr amoungst friends...
as I said ya stay out of the Mountians, well, you're runnin' down between the mountians and stay more with rolling hills (roller-coaster), easier on the fuel budget.

Hank, if you're a GOOD SAM member & have a Pilot/FlyingJ credit card for diesel purchases, you'll get a 5 cent discount per gallon.

Thanks Joe, I have had their Advantage card but I am waiting for their new RV plus charge card. Gotta save some $$$$ somewhere. Hank

Have used the 81, 77, 26, 95 route last spring and again this past fall. Great route, very light traffic and great views, may never go back to the northern section of 95. Numerous Pilot/Flying Js and others. We start out on Route 15 and pickup 81 just north of Harrisburg, for us the inland route is almost idential to taking 83 south to 95.

I'll be heading south on I95 3/30. Maybe we'll pass each other on your return trip. Travel safely, Hank

Hankaye, that is the way I have gone for several years !! Had a home in upstate New York in the Adirondacks for the summers and used this route from Florida to there and back each fall...Much, much better then that I-95 traffic. I-95 is so congested and has so many accidents I shy away from it whenever possible...

Good route. I was thinking the same way from I-81 and I-77 at Wytheville, VA.
I basically go the same way going to Pigeon Forge, TN area. I go up I-77 til I-81 and back down towards Knoxville on I-81. I just skip over the gorge area on I-40 in NC/TN. using this route.
I have gone I-85 to I-77 at Charlotte, NC to I-26 in Columbia, SC to I-95 from central NC when we have gone to FLA or Charleston, SC while staying on I-26.
Also thats Mt Airy, NC , aka Mayberry USA.

byrdr1, Howdy;
Boy is my face red, I thought twice or maybe 3 times when I posted it originally...
Mt Airy aka Mt. Iddy.. Mayberry was just down the road apiece and 'round the corner...
