Texas - May Suggestions

I have visited a majority of the places on my list for Texas in the past 2.5 years. I wanted to see if I am missing any good locations. I have been thinking about Palo Duro, but the DW mentioned drive time.

Here's my current list of places:
Bastrop SP
Seminole Canyon SP
Garner SP
Lake Livingston SP
Pedernales Falls SP
McKinney Falls SP
Pace Bend Park
Palmetto SP
Guadalupe River SP
Black Rock Park
Inks Lake SP
Lost Maples State Natural Area
Junction area
Big Bend
Huntsville SP
Cagle Recreation Area
San Angelo SP
Balmorhea SP
Davis Mountains SP
Union Grove COE
Sumner Lake SP
Sandy Creek (Jasper, TX)

Any suggestions? Thanks.

You've done a bunch of them.
Maybe Brazos Bend, if it didn't have too much Harvey damage.

We camped 3 nights in Palo Duro, last May, on our way to Junction Creek, outside of Durango CO.

While there we took a day trip over to Caprock Canyon SP and I have also heard the Copper Breaks SP is worth while, so we are planning camping at both places in the future.

Palo Duro has quite a bit to do, hiking, bike riding, horseback riding and they have camp sites with water and electric. The dump station was just outside the entrance to the loop we were in. The Texas Outdoor Musical is quite something to see

We camped at Preston Bend COE, on lake Texoma, which has been completely remodeled and also has water and electric sites, with the dump station close by.

This spring we are planning another trip out to the Big Bend area and Davis Mountains SP.

Last spring, I had Palo Duro and Caprock Canyons booked in April. My work travel schedule got in the way. We ended up going to Davis Mountains and Balmorhea later that month. I have been thinking about booking 2 nights at Caprock Canyons and 3 nights at Palo Duro in early May. The DW mentioned the drive time, so I've been thinking about other options.

I didn't see Tyler SP on your list. I think that place will forever be on my top 5 places here in Texas.

Does it compare to any other SP? I've seen it come in searches for top SPs.

We both grew up just north of Amarillo in Dumas & my recommendation for Palo Duro Canyon would be late summer/early fall as in the spring the weather can be a bit on the stormy side. From experience you don't want to be in the canyon during/after a heavy spring rain without a boat or an rv that floats. It is beautiful though & 2nd only to the Grand Canyon.

From Austin have you ever been to Marble Falls area? We love that area & have stayed at Sunset Pointe Rv Resort just west of MF & love it. Bluebonnet Cafe has the best pies in Texas.

For the OP; I did not mention Marble Falls because I figured you had been there; I certainly would have been to get out of Austin. I lived in MF for a couple of years and it was the only place I've ever lived that I thought I was on vacation every day even though I was working. Since you've been to Inks you have probably been in the area, if not, you need to do yourself a favor and spend some time there.

My favorite lake was always LBJ. Sunset Point is on the lake as I recall. I've been there once and it was nice but pricey if I recall; by Wirtz dam if I remember. Used to watch folks line the fences overlooking the gates fishing for white bass when they were running. When I went to the RV park looked like you can't do that anymore.....and the RV park wasn't there at all back when (70s).

The Bluebonnet was there back then, better than it is now. Knew every person that worked there and the owners - it was our "go to" place for breakfast almost every day. I've not been in there in about 4 years but hopefully they are still doing well. And yes, their pies used to be something really special.

Also, didn't notice but you might also want to spend time in Fredericksburg. We really like it there too; not as much as MF because there's nothing to do but look at a bit of history, shop and......eat, which is something I need to cut back on.

Plenty of big storms in the panhandle during the spring.. We spent a week in Copper Breaks SP this past spring.. was a wild ride a couple of night.

Panhandle is for the fall.. we loved Caprock Canyon state park this past November..

Amarillo, one of the few places you can stand knee deep in mud in the middle of a dust storm, get sunburned on your back and windburned on your face while watching the snow melt off the top of the trailer while hail pounds the tow vehicle.

I also 2nd Tyler SP. Not sure how it compares to others but it has a nice little lake and the lake front campsites have a nice view.

I tell people the panhandle is ALWAYS too something;
too hot, too cold, too windy, too stormy, too dry, too wet, too dusty, very seldom too pretty & likely to change any minute.

The weather can cooperate and be beautiful much of the time. But, in the panhandle you have to know what's there to think you are going to see something beautiful. If you don't like flat vistas with undulating hills and not much else you will be disappointed. You have to move away a bit to get to the breaks to find some landscape "scenery". On the other hand, you can go to Amarillo and put your hands on a 72oz. steak at the Texan! and it could be free if you can wolf it down in an hour....

Looks like I should save Palo Duro for the fall. Tyler SP looks to book up fast (like most SP). I typically schedule trips further out, but I cancelled about 5 different reservations last year. My work travel is unpredictable at times.

I've been searching for this photo ever since I posted.. This is our neighbor the next morning... everyone was okay.. I think we were the only folks that didn't spend the night in the bath house... and the campground cleared out before noon..

The current record holder is a 124 pound woman that ate 3 of them, in 20 minutes flat

To qualify for free, you must eat the 4.5 pound roast, a baked potato, salad, roll and shrimp cocktail.

woman breaks big texan 72 oz steak record

I am pretty sure I could not eat one of them, in several hours.
