COE campgrounds

MY DW and I will be travelling form Northern Michigan to Park of Diamond Ar and the to San Antonio Tx. and then to New Orleans La. before heading Home looking to stay at some of the COE campgrounds on the way. DW is nervous about no campground personal will be in the campground. Is there anyone who has stayed at one?

Corps of Engineers. Generally there will be a host in each park. What kind of personnel would make her feel better?

We’ve used COE campground North Bend Park in Virginia many times. It’s an excellent campground, well maintained with lots of amenities. Prices are very reasonable and no problem accommodating a 39ft 5er. The web page has a warning to contact the campground prior to arrival. If the campground is not staffed during the shutdown, they will not honor reservations and you may find someone already set up on your site. The park is normally beautifully maintained, but don’t know what you’ll find during the shutdown.

We have stayed at a bunch of COE campgrounds all through the mid-West. Our campgrounds of choice.
If you have the Senior Pass you get 1/2 off.
Always water and electric, rarely sewer.
In our experience, one occupied site will have a sign "Your Campground Host Is".

Corps of Engineer camps vary in services available. Some have electric and water hookups, some have hand pumps and outhouses. We've stayed at several unmanned, self service campsites. We stayed at a couple in unmanned sites in Minnesota last year, in the first there were 2 tents and our camper, the second had 4 tents, and two campers. Unmanned sites are usually very quiet, but be prepared to use the outhouse unless you want to tow your unit to an off site dump station. There is a Corp of Engineer campsite at Cross Lake MN that has water, electric and a dump site, they typically have a waiting list for summer camping. People usually have to reserve a site a couple months in advance. I prefer the unmanned sites; just drive in, find a site you like, park, and walk to the registration station, fill out the camping permit and leave your payment in the envelope.

COE in Texas

FYI Texas offers many different venues for rv'n, COE just one. Check out the Texas Parks, LCRA, KOA's and lots of private ones as well. Just keep in mind camping down here has to be planned except for weekdays, holidays require extra planning time. Seems everyone has an rv today and parks fill up quick. Also around COE parks depending on rain this spring some may be flooded out or damaged from 2018 floods, so if you make reservations always recheck the COE website before leaving. Good luck and happy camping!

We inquired a few years ago about staying at the COE parks. I am retired Cdn. govt. (RCMP) and was told it was for US citizens only. Correct me if I am wrong.

Joe,

I had heard several times that the lifetime passes for disabled and seniors and the annual military passes are for US citizens only. I also believe, but can't check on it because the COE website is down due to the shutdown, that the annual passes that can be purchased are available for US and Canadian citizens. They will get you into the COE parks for a year, but do not have the 50% off camping fee provision. When the website comes online again, I'll check (if I remember) and see what I can find.

I have never heard of this. Most COE campgrounds are at federal reservoirs and projects owned and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. One of DW's (Dear (Dearest) Wife) favorite camping spots is in a COE campground so we go often.

No "membership" is required and I've never been asked about citizenship when making a reservation or checking in, nor have I seen anything related to citizenship in the campground rules or Ts & Cs.
