California speed governing on the way

From Yahoo news this AM:

"The measure, California Senate Bill 961, would require every passenger vehicle, truck and bus manufactured or sold in California to have speed governors starting in 2027. The devices would use GPS technology or cameras to verify the speed limit in a particular area and slow a speeding vehicle down if it approaches 10 mph over the limit."

I guess we all knew the world was headed in this direction....

I honestly can honestly say that CA has descended to the depths of decay that I think it is "unsalvageable!"

And this is supposed to make people want to stay in that s##t state? This is a way to make more money so they can provide free services to people who broke into the country. The politicians there need to be tested for lead poisoning because they can't think.

It is an attempt to curb the surge in fatalities, will it work? I highly doubt it.

This thread is veering into the political lane and if it continues it will be sent to the off ramp.

This will be a disaster. Of late, the FMCSA (the governing body that claims to be focused on truck safety) has been trying to implement speed limiters on heavy commercial trucks (18 wheelers) to 65 or 62 mph all across the nation, not just California.

Stop and think about this. First, you can never successfully program two vehicles to run at the exact same speed, so one vehicle will always be just slightly faster than the other one. Or in the case of these heavy trucks, one will be loaded heavier than the other, making one faster (or slower) than the other. So when the slightly faster truck pulls out to make a pass at a fraction of a mph more than the other, it may take 2 miles (or 10) to safely complete the pass. I see this all the time now, as some trucking companies have already implemented speed limiting their trucks for insurance purposes or they don't trust in their drivers' abilities. Either way, what this will accomplish is, automobile drivers trapped behind 62-65 mph trucks becoming VERY frustrated in their inability to get by these trucks. We already see cars cutting in between trucks and other traffic at speeds in excess of 100 mph as it stands now. It will only get worse if this is initiated.

And IF this is implemented, if you think there's a driver shortage now? Over 50% of the drivers I know will leave the industry. You have to understand, we are paid by the mile. So if I can drive 600 miles in the 11 hours of daily driving time and I make .75 cents a mile, I make $450 that day. But if you limit my speed to let's say 65 mph, (which in reality causes me to average 50 mph with stops for fuel, mandatory DOT break, ETC) I'm getting $412.50 for the same number of hours behind the wheel. That may not seem like much of a difference, but would you be willing to take an 8.3% pay cut at your job?

Not to mention what delays it will cause in the supply chain. It will be worse than the COVID year(s). In the COVID years the FMCSA waived many drivers DOT hours rule, allowing many of us to disregard the 11 hour a day, 70 hour per week mandates. Those of us that hauled pharmaceuticals (as we do) and other essential goods were exempt. That won't apply to these rules.

They have not pushed the button on this yet and I STRONGLY suspect that it will happen immediately after the November election should the democrats win because this will create so much chaos that the current administration would catch a large bullet for this. (I'm aware that politics are not a discussion here and this information I'm passing along is not meant to be political in nature, just facts and information) So if you look at what I'm passing along here and don't want the interstates clogged up and deliveries backed up severely, you may want to speak with your elected officials and see if they can squash this before it becomes a reality. As many of you know once a law is passed it's quite an endeavor to repeal it.

Thanks for hearing me out.

Its already here in Ca. I commute on a 2 lane highway and see people speed on the shoulder and then spin out when they get back on the road, or try to pass and realize there isn't enough room and FORCE their way back into the lane.

What if I don't have Facebook or for that matter friends? When I got back from overseas (worked for govt), the speed limit was 55mph. Last 2 wheel motorcycle I owned (sold it a couple years ago) was a 1980 GS1000G and it had an 85 mph speedometer. Took a ride out IH10 going west out of SATX and pegged the speedometer and had to stay in the right lane as everyone was passing me.... If I were in Cali and faced with a governor on my ride, I would just buy a 2006 Ford F350 or a 2006 Goldwing trike and not worry about it!

Is this proposed legislation or is it now law?

The bill was introduced in the California Senate by Senator Wiener on January 23,2024. It still requires approval in the CA senate and I believe the house, then it could be signed by the governor and become law....

It scary part, for me, is not the "intelligent speed limiter" requirement in section 1, but the requirement to have "side reinforcement on all vehicles with a GVWR greater than 10K. That part of his proposal has no "implementation date for new vehicles" but the way it's written, is required on ALL vehicles manufactured, sold or registered in California. From the looks of the way it's written, it would require a significant weight addition to reinforce to meet the requirement: If I'm reading it correctly, when it comes time to reregister a one ton dually, you would need to modify it with this side reinforcement before you can register the truck. There is no "manufactured or sold after 2027" clause on section two.... ?????

"(1) Is able to provide vehicle crash protection for a midsize car to prevent the intrusion of the occupant survival space when struck at any location and from any angle ay any speed up to 40 miles per hour."

You can read the entire "proposed legislation" here: https://legiscan.com/CA/text/SB961/2023

The news hasn’t mentioned the additional protection that I have seen. I watch very little news and really only pay attention to the traffic and weather because I don’t want to take anti depressants.

Yep, I hear you on the depressing news these days... You might want to read the proposed law at the link I posted. It doesn't affect me (yet), but like most "legal documents", the big part up top "gives you things" and the "tiny parts buried in the bottom" take it back plus take even more when you least expect it.....

Additional weight = lower 'gas mileage'. From the state that already has initiatives to make everything more expensive/impossible in the future.
