In the land of Why

Why is it that the driver side rear gutter spout drains and pours down directly on the shore power connection? Just wondering!

Because some designer was ordered to make it that way.

Many years ago I was supervising a commercial being filmed in Monument Valley. The director of this commercial saw himself as a Cecil B Demille. The shot he wanted to take was across the Valley and about two miles away were some tourist parked looking over the Valley. C.B. sent me and a crew member, Billy Sinclair, to make the tourist go away and so pristine his shot. When Billy and I got there the tourist, from Japan, were friendly and when we asked if they would mind moving the man asked "Why?" I will never forget Billy's answer. "There ain't no why. You just got to move."

Answer to the original question,
There ain't no why!

Why? Because people who design these campers have never stepped foot inside one of them, let along actually camped in one.

I don't know the exact configuration of your specific camper, but perhaps a gutter drip rail would help divert the water away from the plug. Something like this.... easy to install.

Something like this (I'm sure you can get shorter lengths somewhere else.

Because there are multiple designers and engineers for different systems and no one is talking to the other

Years ago there was a "RV downspout diverter kit" that was not much more than a short piece of light duty 3/4" garden hose that was "molded to fit the RV downspouts". It was about 3' long and they could be connected together to extend the length so the rainwater flowed all the way to the ground without splashing.

I wonder if you could get a section of CHEAP vinyl garden hose and slip it over that gutter extension, then route it around the corner so it dripped on the bumper rather than the shore power connector ??? Or, maybe just put a 6" piece of "swim noodle" over the gutter extension to get the drips further away from the trailer??? Either of those would mean an extra step during trailer setup/breakdown to install/remove the extra piece, but you'd only need to do it when it looks like it may rain.

As for "WHY" ... there ain't no rhyme nor reason to much that goes into planning for alternative conditions like rain or ice or even COLD weather....

These things are designed with the expectation that it will always be sunny to partly sunny, 75-80 degrees, all the windows open for fresh air inside the trailer and the awning extended (never any wind) so chairs, tables, paper plates and cups never blow away and no need for a screened in room, there's NEVER any bugs in a campsite.......

John: I like the idea of using something to extend the downspout. If I were to wrap it around to splash on the bumper I would probably go raving mad, drips and rattles drive me nuts!

As far a a piece of hose as an extension, I think I will obtain a very long piece, setup in Goshen and run the end onto the Cougar designers desk!

Many years ago I worked for a fortune 500 company. One of the jobs for the crew of 5 men I managed was to re-engineer equipment designed by the engineering Dept. that employees could not operate. They do not teach common sense in school anymore.

So true !!! These days, it seems that "interior design/color attractiveness/bling" outweigh function or practicality. Engineering has been "hijacked" by "projections from marketing on what will be hot features this year in the competition brands".... That drives what Keystone does far more than "sound engineering detail".....

It's no longer about what makes sense and works. These days it's about how to create an impression when a buyer first walks into a new model coach.....

As we see with everything else these days, those that tout EVs for example, common sense and attention to detail is being lost. As long as RV manufacturers put in dangling pendant lights, "mood lighting" around the chairs/ceiling/islands, hundreds of USB charging ports, enough outside "glow lights" to illuminate an air strip etc. they can cut the frame diameter by a couple of inches, cut the tire size, use thinner and thinner gauge aluminum for wall studs, wall sheathing as thin as tissue paper, electronics that cost no more than a soda pop and far too many are impressed....and happy. Thus we have the current trend of "please the eye" and not a single care about function, longevity, common sense.

What Danny said: Our Eagle has wireless cell phone charging
out the kazoo, but a propane only water heater. Go figure.

When you start working on these things, you start to really see the design flaws. I’ve maintained that if the designer had to live in his/her creation for just a weekend we would have much more functional RVs

That's why Brinkley is doing so well, they are all campers and a true quality control system is in place on their line. Of course due to this they aren't pumping out anything close to the volume of the major builders.
