External Power

2020 Cougar 30rls Was not happy with the External Power Supply connecter on the center of the rear wall. Most places that I camp the Supply Posts are on the side near water and maybe sewer connections. I added an external Power Connector to side next to the Compartment door, spliced it in before the Surge Protector so I can use either one with protection.
Can save having to use an extension cord.

Nice improvement.

Interesting, is your 5er 30 or 50 amp. splicing three runs of 6/4 romex would require a good size J-box to get all the wires connected safely.

We have a 50 amp service that connects at the rear also, we don't carry an extension cord, my 50 amp shore cable is just SOOW 6/4 cable, rubbed insulation and very fixable and lite.

Yes, that is 40' of 6/4 SOOW cable in a three gallon bucket. The hand in the second picture is just for scale.

Nice upgrade. Mine is on the back corner. I carry an extension cord that I keep in a tote one the front compartment. In 9 years I’ve had to use it once. I have a cord reel, so wrapping up the normal 50 amp cord is quick and easy regardless of outside temps. That is one upgrade I’d recommend to anyone if you can figure out a place to put it. When it’s time to hook up, grab the end and walk, when it’s time to put it away, I wrap a rag around it to clean it as I crank the reel. Literally takes about 15 seconds to wrap the cord up.

Nice upgrade, do you have any warning labels on the connections as BOTH are live when plugged in.

Not saying it will happen but you never know when a curious kid might wander by and have a look see….

A straight splice to 2 male connections is a deadly disaster waiting to happen. Anytime you connect to one the other will be live, posing a hazard to anyone that may touch it.

My connector is also located on the rear which is strange since the power center is mid camper. It took about 20 ft more cable to reach the rear location.

Maybe better to figure out how to lock the connection not in use. That is a true Deadman’s Cable!

Locks can break or be forgotten. There are several was to rectfy the situation (and bring it up to code), but having a live exposed source like that is a danger, a risk for electrocution, and an increadible liability. There are some things you can MacGyver, electrical systems are not one of them.

Yeah, you probably want to look into a generator transfer switch for that setup. In this case, you're not switching over to a generator, just a secondary main supply. The one shown in the post below is a manual switch, but they also make automatic switches.
