Gun Laws

Maine is an open or concealed-carry State with no license required. As such, we commonly carry a firearm in the trailer when camping, with the exception of trips to Acadia National Park - where firearms are prohibited. Likewise, you don’t want to make the mistake of crossing the Canadian border with a firearm. Aside from that and, getting back to Acadia, what law would be broken if your trailer had cause to be searched in the Park and a firearm was present - even though you so informed the personnel doing the search. Would you simply be told to leave, is it a misdemeanor or, worse, a federal offense??? I know that many will be traveling to Acadia this summer - and quite a few will have firearms in their trailers - so it’s just a question that needs an answer.

Federal park? I’d figure federal offense. Gun discussions are usually not permitted, as the laws vary by state/country. I’m going to leave this thread IF someone can cite specific law, otherwise it will be locked.

Here you go:

Congress approved a new law allowing loaded firearms in national parks starting Feb. 22, 2010. That means people can openly carry legal handguns, rifles, shotguns and other firearms and also may carry concealed guns as allowed by state statute.
While this law changes gun regulations in national parks, there are still many important restrictions on the transportation and use of guns under state and federal laws:
• Although it is now legal to carry loaded guns in national parks, guns cannot be fired except in rare circumstances. Hunting is illegal in most national parks except under special permits. Target practice also is banned.

I've carried in national parks and have never had an issue....but I've never been asked.

Sourdough beat me to it! I couldn't remember the year that the law was passed, but I knew that it had been at least 6 or 7 years ago. I will most likely be carrying when Peggy and I bicycle the Cades Cove Loop in the Smoky Mountain National Park in May......concealed of course as we both have HCP permits for the state of TN.

Well since the question has been answered, I don’t see any reason for anymore “I’ll be doing this or that”. That’s what gets these threads locked. If no one else has any additional information specific to the question I will close it.

Before it's closed I would add a caution;

Carrying in national parks is legal but be careful with other parks and don't confuse national with state parks. I entered a TX state park the other day and a very large sign was posted prohibiting guns, open or concealed which I had never seen before - maybe because open carry was passed recently. Just be sure and check the regulations for ANY kind of park, refuge, etc. you are visiting.....along with ALL state laws in any state you will visit or pass through.

Edit: checked up on the TX sign I saw. The law says you can carry a gun in TX state parks, which I thought, BUT you cannot carry in a state park leased from the federal government.. I was at a state park on a COE lake so that would explain that I suppose. Just wanted to note that.

The only place in a National park that is prohibited to carry are buildings that have workers/personnel in them. handgunlaw.us is a good website for reference. The NRA also has state specific info too.

When I check on Yellow Stone I was told it was you can open carry but if you discharge it for any reason it's $10,000 fine.

I think if you research there are limited, very specific, reasons the weapon can be discharged. Barring life or death I wouldn't.

Here is the NPS website to maybe help one along: file:///C:/Users/Jim%20and%20Brenda/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/INetCache/IE/TZ106KVB/Firearms-in-IMRparks2-2010.pdf
And to add a little fodder to the discussion: https://www.yellowstonepark.com/park...in-yellowstone

Why do people think that just because someone carries a firearm that they just HAVE to shoot it?? I find that most people that have bothered to get a carry license and be responsible for their own immediate defense are very aware of the responsibilities involved and the people who don't think that they are in danger. Knowing the laws of the states we travel to is a necessity. I do. I research and review the state laws any time I go anywhere. This issue should not be so divisive as it is.

Mods, thanks for keeping this thread open as it is an important subject and information is a good thing.

I was just in smoky mountain national park yesterday and at each trailhead there was a sign with a pistol with a line through it.

That’s almost like an open invitation to any criminal element. Funny that a visual symbol is used to make sure any potential perp understands! I would rather see a sign that says “Concealed Carry Permitted - Discharge of Firearms Prohibited Except for Personal Defense”. If a potential perp can read that might get his attention!
