Blue Ridge Parkway advice

Planning our fall trip thinking about doing the Blue Ridge Parkway Will be doing it in a car not pulling a trailer. Who has done it ? How much time did you take? North to south or south to north? Attractions along the way or at either end? Spent some time in Cherokee, NC last year, enjoyed it so going back to the area this year.

Only have done the BRP on a bike with the missus on pillion. Rode behind an under powered Class A for every mile at about 20 mph and the ride was not much fun. Choose your time carefully to avoid these situations. When the leaves change it brings out the slow pokes. Only ride that compared was the Natchez Trace... missus wanted to take the bike on an "Elvis Tribute" tour and riding 45 mph in a sea of tall trees when it is 137F and HUMID and bugs in your face was miserable. Maybe try that one in mid-winter?

can't give you the whole route but a must as far as I am concerned is stop and explore Little Switzerland. You can't beat the valleys. do lunch and have a drink.

We did Skyline Drive several times from north to south but never continued on to Blue Ridge Pky. Campgrounds on SLD were no hookups but restrooms were very clean. Overlook sites of Appellation Trail were fabulous and Luray Caverns in the center of the park was a definite must see. Some good inclines and descents so don't expect to break any speed records.

Enjoy and travel safely, Hank

So far this a Plan B if our other plans fail but it is something I have wanted to drive for a while as well as the Natchez Trace.

BMP great trip

We did the trip a few times, also camped in Cherokee, NC. Day trip over to Dolly World.
First time we followed our GPS and wound up on BMP towing our 39' Cougar 337 RES, not much fun! No turn around once committed.

The Natchez Trace, IMHO, is best enjoyed in the early spring, heading north, from Natchez. Speed limit is, as reported in an earlier post, 45MPH. The federal law enforcement typically is "on site from 8AM to 4PM" with minimal state enforcement during "non-duty times".

There are no facilities on the Trace, so you'll need to exit for fuel, food and camping. There are numerous visitor's sites to stop and explore a number of historic sites. Parking for big rigs is available at most. There are also "conventional rest stops" with parking and restroom facilities. Unless it's changed this year, there is no commercial traffic, so you won't find 18 wheelers on the Trace.

The Natchez Trace drove me crazy; BUGS BUGS BUGS at 45 mph and NOTHING to see but big trees. Was on a trike with the missus and there are no places for a potty stop or a break for a cup of coffee. The highway did seem to have more LEOs watching for speeders than most as you could easily go 60 or 70 mph on this road safely (imho).

Natchez Trace probably should start a new thread.

As for Blue Ridge Park it is nearly 500 miles long if going on it make sure you know which part your RV WILL NOT FIT.

Most all of the driving we do in the Lower 48 is with a rental car It will be a few years before the Tumbleweed is pulled down the Alcan if at all.

Don't bypass the Cherokee museum and wheels through time museum . We spent a week riding the area from Gatlinburg Tennessee COE camp ground last year.

We have done sections in VA with car or truck and found it a beautiful trip - except on weekends when driving may not be fun. Others have done it with RVs - narrow roads and some tight bridges
