New Carbon 327

We finally made the move to a fifth wheel from a travel trailer and cant believe how much better it tows. Next will be a truck upgrade to a dually, but that will be waiting till the winter.

Nice Rig. We love our 327 and pull it with an F250SRW also. No issues.

YEs, it does pull it without an issue, but I also know I am over my trucks gvwr, not that I think the wheels will pop off or implode. I just know my future holds a 1 ton in it.

To be honest it tows much better than I expected, we spent last weekend in New Hampshire it towed through the mountains without any hesitation.

I just figured out that our setup necessitates a new drivers license type. Not sure about your state.

No change in license, but from what I have seen on the roads it wouldn't be a bad idea!

The dodge 3500 has a GVWR over 14k. The Carbon 327 is:
12410 (shipping weight)
4090 (capacity)
= 16500 GVWR

Texas says "a combination of vehicles that has a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, if the gross vehicle weight rating of any vehicle or vehicles in tow is more than 10,000 pounds."

As such, the Class-A is required. If someone can show me that it's not, I'm all ears...

Cb1000...I don't own a dodge or live in texas....thanks for the info though, if I need someone to tell me im over my legal limits ill go ask my neighbor the state trooper.
Btw ...when I do buy a new truck dodge wont make the list, sorry but I had my fill of them...great engine though.

As a side note: when researching the license requirement for Texas I found that I got a different answer from anyone I asked, from the state trooper to the head of weights and measures in Austin.. It simply doesn't come up in their everyday conversation. I finally got a lawyer to look up the actual statute and low and behold... yep.. any combo with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more needs a Class A non-CDL Texas license.. Next research project.. is that placarded GVWR, or registered GVWR..

So the trooper next door might not be your best choice for that particular bit of information..

Oh... I wouldn't buy a Dodge either.. Hate those silly looking mirrors..

Well I apologize CB1000...I thought you were trying to bust my hump. I didn't realize things were like that in texas, but as I noted I live in ma and have bigger concerns than a license endorsement. although im sure once ma knows they will force this also just for the $$. From what I have read in the last few minutes it sounds like a real haste to get the endorsement.

State trooper next door is always my go too for questions regarding MY state.

Im not trying to start a truck bashing, I just had bad luck with that brand and good luck with the one im in.

Might look up the requirement in MA - reciprocity just requires that you're legal in your state.

Mirrors are funny looking, but as this is only used as a tow truck, I can deal with the mirrors. You can get them with non-tow mirrors too.



I noticed that when buying the dodge, if you ordered one you could "set" the GVWR, which I really didn't understand at the time. As I wasn't ordering, I assume I get what I get...

And I agree - it's NOT well known in Texas, even where you take the Class-A tests, apparently it's a big enough issue to need to keep a reference number to Austin so they don't force you to take the CDL test.

What makes it not well known has me concerned, as sometimes officers that don't know sort out on the side of "issue a ticket anyway" - and the bigger issue is accident liability.. Not sure what happens if you get into an accident with a vehicle that you're technically not licensed to drive...

So I'll start studying for the written part of the test. I like adding licenses anyway..

Well good luck, btw not required in all of new England unless you are registered as commercial and then the only requirement would be a physical. My brother holds a CDL and pretty much cant believe that he has to get tested yet any person can drive a RV without a second thought.

Also I am within the GCWR of my truck which is 23500lbs, yes I am over my gvwr....catch 22 and I suppose if someone really wanted to bust my chops they could scale me and see it.
