There shouldn't be any sewer gas smell in sinks and shower if the traps are working. I won't leave the gray open and here's why. Years ago we bought a used hybrid that was in a water, electric site in mountains of PA. The previous owners left the gray open and draining on the ground. The gray tank valve would not close. First thing after bringing it home went to flush tanks and the outlet side on the gray tank had a good inch of white buildup in the bottom. I pulled out the pressure washer and went to work with the wand up the discharge and a low pressure spray head. I took about 2 hrs to get the soap solids out. Apparently every use the water left in the tank that couldn't drain had evaporated leaving more soap deposits behind. I'm all for shortcuts but how much effort does it take to pull a valve handle, wait a minute or two then shove it closed?
