Water heater bypass

I have a Bullet 210. First time winterizing it as I usually have a local dealer do it. I put the hot water tank in bypass connected the antifreeze to the pump inlet and turned on the pump. I had pink fluid coming out of the taps but also had it coming out of the hot water tank where I had removed the plug. It didn't make any difference which way I set the bypass valve, antifreeze still came out of the hot water tank. Is there another step I'm missing?

There is a one - way check valve that should isolate the water tank when you turn the bypass on. Perhaps it is not seating. It is in the piping near the tank.

Joe beat me to it. Wrote a detailed reply but my ISP lost it. The check valve/backflow preventer on the hot water out side could be defective allowing water to enter the hwh. I am assuming you have a one valve bypass. If you have 3 it literally blocks the water without depending on the valve.

Just one shutoff valve. Not 100% sure as to the location of the check valve. There's a large brass fitting coming out of the top of the tank but not sure how this would function. I've got pictures of the setup but don't k ow how yo post on here yet. I see a button to attach pics but it requires an HTTP address . The pictures are on my phone.

Click Go Advanced, and then add as an attachment (the paper clip)

The brass item at the tank in the picture looks to be the check valve.

The brass fitting will be the check valve. With a one handle bypass valve (vs 3) the bypass valve diverts the water from the inlet to the water heater. Once it is turned and bypassing the cold inlet it depends on the check valve to keep the diverted water from running into the hwh from the hot side. If your hwh keeps filling whether the valve is in bypass or not it sounds like the check valve has failed. Pull it out and they sell them at Lowe's, Home Depot etc.

The brass valves usually hold much better than the plastic ones. Also you might be sure they installed it the correct direction, could be in backwards, stranger things have happened.

If it was installed backwards you wouldn't get any hot water out under normal operating conditions.

Yes, that brass section screwed into the hot water outlet of the tank is the check valve. Same thing happened to me this year for the first time, pink stuff back flowing into Hot Water Tank while winterizing. Since I was in a hurry to winterize and did not have a spare check valve, I removed the old one examined it, cleaned, and put back in. Worked and finished winterizing. Not trusting it I ordered two. One will be put in in the Spring and one for a spare. Brass ones are around $9.00

Now.....be truthful here, you have to turn 3 valves now instead of one!!! It does work though and no worry about malfunctioning check valves.....but that "twisting and turning?"..... It could wear you out....

Actually, living in Central Texas the most I do is drain the HW tank, blow the lines out and pour antifreeze in the p-traps. Haven't touched the bypass valves since I installed them.. [emoji39]

Yep. I haven't "winterized" in a few years since we started to come to FL for the winter. Just need to drain the hwh every now and again. Hope all is going with you and yours Javi.

Thanks. I think you are correct. This will have to wait until spring now. I'll have to remove the bottom panel of the cupboard on order to access the valve.

But late with this but I think I have it figured out now. There has to be two check valves; one at the top and at the bottom of the tank. The one at the bottom prevents water from flowing out of the tank in normal mode but allows water into the tank when the selector valve handle is in the horizontal position. The valve at the top allows flow out of the tank but won't allow flow into the tank when in bypass mode (antifreeze). So my problem could either be the selector valve or the top check valve.
Does this make sense?

There is only ONE check valve which is located at the hot water outlet from the tank (top). There is no need for a check valve on the inlet (lower connection). When the lower valve is turned on, water flows into the tank (and the valve closes the bypass tube), when the valve is turned to "winterize" (off) the valve closes the opening into the tank, opens the entry into the bypass tube and stops the flow into the tank without the need for a check valve.
