Outback 290 ubh. Anyone have one? Have some questions

We are looking to upgrade to an Outback 290 ubh. It has the Happy Jack system on the bunks. It can raise and lower the bunks to the top for extended space in the bunk area. We will have the need occasionally to sleep 2 adults and a child in the bunk area. Can the lower bunk be raised just a little to make space on the floor level for a child to sleep? If it is raised a foot or two, is it as strong there as in it's normally parked position?

Any other observations on the 290?

Heard the roof may not be walkable. What do you know?

What do you tow it with? We are hoping to use our 2004 Escalade.

axles! From experience on my HappiJack beds.you can raise them, but they will lose support needed to be steady. Also the weight of two adults cantilevered on the side could cause issues with putting much strain on the system and walls. YMMV.

Depending the size of the child, they are about 18 inches off the floor. It may be like sleeping in a cave. Kids are different, some will love it, some won't.

General rule, if no ladder from the factory, then not walkable. Cut about 3 2'x2' foam boards to distribute your weight to walk in.

No idea on your TV. It depends on what your actual, not brochure tongue weight will be. No one camps in an empty trailer. No one. Also depends on your receiver rating, weight distributing hitch, payload of vehicle from your door post, and how much stuff/many people you put in it. I'm guessing the payload will be below the weight of the hitch, passengers, and tongue weight, but only you can determine that.

Thanks ctbruce. Sounds like the beds will not do what we were hoping they would. Anyone else here have a Outback 290ubh?

Have had a 290UBH for 4 months. The beds can be braced in all 4 corners with metal pins that fit into the bed frame. Allowing you to set the height where you desire. I wouldn't have an adult on the bed without them.

Ah, good info. So you can move the bed to where you want it to be and then brace it. I will have adults on it.

Another quick question: can the top bunk be moved to the top while the bottom stays put where it is? So as to give the person in the bottom bunk a bunch of headroom. I am guessing it would take being able to dis-engage the bunk from the drive system once you lock it down. .

Thanks for the info.

Have you looked at the specs for towing with a 14 year old Escalade vs the trailer you have? I suspect you might be enlightened if you choose to look into being safe.

You can have the top bunk all the way up, but it uses your brace pins to do it. You would not be able to have the bottom braced also unless you got a second set of pins. Also, there is only 4 specific heights that can be braced. The lowest looks to be about 2.5 to 3 feet off the floor. Hope this helps, recommend you find one and look it over.

There is no disengagement needed, the pins stop the lowering of the bunk and the lift system keeps moving to adjust the other bunk. You can raise the bunk higher then the pins are placed, but they stop it from lowering.

Thank you, thank you. A wealth of information. We saw one in person but the salesperson didn't know anything about it and there was no power to the camper. That's just the information we needed. Thanks again.
