How do you take out your hitch

I don't know a0out others, but I take my hitch out unless I'm towing. I know most people leave it in because it's heavy. Here's how I remove mine.Click image for larger version

That's one way to do it for sure

Thank goodness I have a long bed and a "regular" hitch. My engine hoist just hoists engines.

I just lift mine...that may change when I blow my back out or I get a bit older. Maybe on the next truck I'll switch to an Anderson hitch which is very light and easy to take out.

On my Reese Elite I just pull the pins on the head and take it out then pull the pins on the frame and take it out.. separately the pieces weigh less than maybe 50 pounds.. any way it's pretty easy for this old man to do it..

I really don't remove it though unless I need the full bed for something..

Pretty sure you have the same head as I have on the select plus. I may start pulling the pins and separating them to reduce weight. I don't pull it very often though.

How do you take out your hitch?

I just got mine so I haven't had to take it out yet. I asked a friend how he did his and he said he just pulls the pins in the bed and leaves it attached to the fifth wheel. He just raises it out with the trailer, drives off, and leaves it hanging on the trailer.

I pull the head, then the frame, then the rails. The frame is the heaviest of the unit so it gets slid to the tailgate and then put in the spot where it resides in the garage. I can back the truck right to the spot so it is a short distance for it to go. Right now I get one of my boys to put it in and out but was thinking of making a stand level with the tailgate for the future when they are not around to help the old man out . Then it would be a matter of just sliding it in or out and not having to muscle it to the ground. like the engine hoist idea but I don't have the extra area to store it.

do you have room for an overhead chain hoist? Can pick one up pretty cheap from harbor freight.

Same thing I use, same brand too. Folds up and stores in the corner.
Also use it to put the generator in the truck bed; for now. I'm shopping for Honda 2000's.
I don't need to be looking at BMW pics.... lol

My Reese 16K non slider is still easy enough to do by myself just separate the head from the base. One more reason I like towing a 5er with a long bed.

I have the Ford fifth wheel hitch kit in my truck with the Reese adapter plate. It's not "terribly heavy" and weighs about 80 pounds. The "problem" is that sometimes it gets stuck in the pucks and won't release without some "encouragement".

I've started using a set of forks installed on the tractor front end loader bucket. Makes for a much easier removal than manually getting the pucks to release and pulling the hitch from the truck by hand.

I leave my hitch in my truck unless I absolutely have to take it out which never happens but I bought a chain hoist when I bought the Hensley TS3. It's way too heavy to try and move, even with two people. I have a side garage that isn't finished with sheetrock which made the chain hoist an easy choice. I can move the TS3 around easily now.

I leave it in the truck usually. I have trailers I can use if I need to haul something big enough that I would need the full bed. That being said I'll either lift it out by hand or use my atv winch if I feel lazy

I generally leave the hitch in the truck bed and only take it out to move a load of junk to the dump. It's pretty heavy because I have a "Bedsaver" attached to the hitch stand. With the slide plate off, it's a two man job to lift out the stand out of truck box because to the added weight of the Bedsaver.

I really like the B&W Companion for the Ford 5er option especially since that one is now rated for 20K. Remove 2 pins on the head and that 80 pound piece comes right off. Loosen 4 levers on the base and that 80 pound piece lifts right up. The hitch goes on a 4 caster dolly and is moved under my garage work bench. That little project takes in the neighborhood of 10 minutes at the most, but 3 or 4 if I'm really up for a little weight lifting and I have already found the keys for the locks that hold everything safe from grubby hands. This year it has already been in and out 3 times and tomorrow or Wednesday, depending on when we get home will be the 4th - and I'm far from being a spring chicken.

DH and I lift it in and out. B&W Companion in turnover gooseneck hitch. Takes about 5 minutes. Pull pin in wheel well, lift 5th wheel head off base, loosen 1 bolt, pull base out (only part that takes 2 people). Put turnover ball in flat side up, re-engage pin in wheel well. We love it. And I get my 8' bed back so easily.

Even so it is only 70 pounds (Andersen), I leave it in the bed unless I need to haul something. I may take it out more often in the winter, but we try to camp about every two weeks.
