Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your "new to you" Everest.
The carpet is stapled around the edges. The vinyl under it may or may not cover all the floor. Sometimes it's laid front to back, other models and brand names, it's laid where needed and the carpet barely covers the places it joins the vinyl.
You may be able to pull the carpet at the edges and see with a flashlight how far the vinyl goes under it. Many people install new vinyl or even wood/laminate flooring, so you have more options than just removing the "dated and dirty" carpet.
