You are mostly correct. I suggest a pass-through or auto-transfer inverter,
With all power off, cut the Romex, then separate the wires and make sure they are away from anything they could short out on. Turn the power back on, then find which end is "live". That end goes into the AC-In on the inverter. The other end connects to AC-Out. Then using the correct gauge wire, connect the inverter to the batteries.
