What would you do

2018 new
Laredo 298rls 3 slide out motors leaking oil , shower pan not level solid on floor , passenger side wall by bedroom door warped, floor same area gap not attached correctly, outside kitchen door warped & other minor adjustments
So warranty by keystone is to repair all except outside kitchen door, below is the slide out roof repairs
1. Install drip pans & tape roof only

My question is dealer has offered to buy it back as it was only 11 days old when all this was discovered ,less sales tax I'd be out about 2k
Or
Keep the unit with a outside co warranty ( star RV) for 5 years with consequential damage coverage paid for by dealer
What would you do ????

Welcome to the forum!!

Sorry it’s under less than ideal circumstances. IMO your money ahead to get a new one. 3rd party warranties are a roll of the dice and more often you lose. I’m wondering how it got past a PDI?

Gotta go with Chuck. 2k up front now and new trailer. Roll the dice on 3rd pty. warranty, questionable repairs (if they cover them) etc. Nope, take the new one IMO.

Take the offer of the new one but only after a very thorough pre inspection by you & the service manager with the GM of the dealership present & all promises of further repairs in writing signed off by both.

I'm confused, If the dealer offers the OP a "trade in" on his original unit that is 100% of the purchase price of the replacement, he shouldn't have any additional sales tax burden.
Licensing would be a cost but maybe someone can help me understand why the sales tax would be duplicated.

My thinking/thought was in the original purchase you will pay the state a "sales tax" on that purchase. That's gone. The trailer was sold and title issued. Now, they offer to take it back for full purchase price but won't refund the cost of the sales tax paid. OP then has to take possession of a "new" trailer (giving the "used" trailer, ie: trade in back), never registered, and do it again. What I understand of it. Not duplicated, just paying sales tax on 2 different trailers.

Edit: and btw canonman, I love that last question in your signature. I'm still trying to figure it out...

Thanks
I knew about the motor issue with my research & asked during the pdi my fault for trusting the dealer & not looking myself & after getting a copy of their roof inspection I would have walked away then if I looked at them
Dealer hasn't offered a new unit , doubt I'd buy another from them anyway just to buy it back
I was leaning towards losing 2k & move on
I know from research all brands have problems was disappointed after getting it home & finding all that I did
The other brand I'm considering is Forest River Rookwood any thoughts?

We have to FIGHT forest river every time we have a warranty claim. I personally don’t think they are all that good, and I wouldn’t buy one.

Sorry, I thought by your original post that the options you stated were indeed options. I'm also confused by the initial post; it says you bought new, you're last post sounds as if you bought a used unit and didn't do a thorough PDI. If it wasn't new and you didn't do due diligence I'm afraid you have a very big bag to hold.

Rockwood by Forest River? Looked at several and always moved to Keystone. Little brother owned 2; had some issues; got out of RVing this year due to the problems with getting any warranty work done on his new Rockwood 5vr - 8 months in the shop and still arguing with FR/Rockwood - sold the trailer, new Ford 250 King Ranch and all the "stuff" - bought a new Rav4 and Toyota Tacoma. Said between the dealer and FR he had no desire, ever, to have an RV (I will miss him coming to see me in FL). Just what I'm told, I'm sure others have different stories...…

Edit; didn't see Chuck's comments. Seems he mirrors what little brother said...

Your layout is similar to the 325RL we have. A couple of comments, the shower pan feels like you are going to fall through it. Between the wife and I we have used it over 700 times and it still works. The bedroom floor is not attached to the side wall, the carpet fill the gap. If we forget to turn the basement light off there is a little glow along the edge. Our unit utilizes the through the frame mechanism on the 2 main slides and a under the bed unit on the bed slide.

I know I am biased, but the Laredo is as well built as any others in it's price range. The slide motor leakage appears to be a common issue, apparently there is no fix and they continue to use them.

If you like the unit and they are willing to make it right by buying it back, depending on your state laws, it would be considered a trade in and full credit issued for the trade in. Thus no or little sales tax due.

Good Luck

I would sell it back and go to my state officials and seek a full tax refund.

Yes i bought a new 2018 on July 11 2019
Dealer will buy back less sales tax or 5 year star RV extended warranty that's the options
Keystone has approved all repair items except the outside kitchen door unit is a different dealer for repairs one keystone recommended which I'm not impressed with
Yes did a pdi prior
Thanks

True, the dealer cannot refund sales tax. He should however, be able to do something about the extended warranty if they were the sales agent.
If you are willing to work with the dealer going forward, the "trade in" provided should equal the purchase price of the replacement. The net purchase price of the replacement would be $0, so no sales tax. If the extended warranty was sold through the dealer's finance office, I'd be surprised if they couldn't "transfer" it to the replacement. Not sure about licensing fees but in our state those can transfer to the new RV as well.

That depends on the laws of the state where the trailer was purchased and titled/registered. In Michigan, for example, the sales tax is computed "on the sales price of the item" with NO credit for trade value and NO allowance for previous sales tax paid. Each transaction is taxed separately. There has been a recent (in the last 4 years) change that does allow up to 2% credit with a maximum of $120 in credit for trade in value.

When we moved from Louisiana (where trade value is deducted from sales tax due) to Michigan where you can trade in a $40K truck and get NO credit, I was awakened to the "absolute greed" of the state tax collection system....

Each state has different rules and unfortunately, the OP lives in Michigan, so he's not going to get any (or very little) benefit for previous sales tax paid on his next purchase.....

The OP may (and then maybe not) be able to appeal the transaction as a refund (depending on the time expired from purchase to refund) and apply for a refund of sales tax. But, the way I read the laws in Michigan, if the Secretary of State has issued a title and registration, the sales tax is not refundable.

Sell back and think you can regain the sales tax if you buy another within a time span of having paid the original sales tax. In missouri we have one year to apply the paid amount on another vehicle--of any sort by the way.

Chuck, what Division of Forest River do you deal with? FR is a big company with a lot of Divisions and they seem to be operated somewhat independently. Their Rockwood Division has been good to me which is why I’m now on my 3rd one.

We sell the “Sun Seeker” class C line, and Stealth toy haulers.

Stealth came from factory with a damaged generator compartment, noted on DAF and now 11 months later still haven’t paid. Authorized .7 to remove gen, remove inner compartment and install new. I won’t say how long it really took.

Last year had a stealth that the center tiedown pulled out of the floor. Again got .6 to remove the underbelly, remove the fresh tank and they wanted me to just put bigger screws in. When I sent pics of one screw that was held in by silicone, they said oops, no more time authorized. Don’t get me started on the Sun Seeker claims.
