Walmart has great prices and balance the tires. Recommend that you supervise the install

So my question to the group is this: I will soon be upgrading my trailer kings. Gonna drop the 14s and go to a 15" Wheel. I discovered that Discount Tire has Carlisle Radial HDs in a LR E rated for 2840 lbs each at $96/tire. If I go with a LR D tire they will also match Wal-mart's price for the LR D tires at $61/tire at a capacity of like 2250 lbs each. My rig has a GVWR of 7750 lbs.

Going with 4 LR E tires gives me a carrying capacity of 11,360 lbs, vs 9,000 for the LR D tires. We often talk about extra carrying capacity, but will that LR E tire be so much extra, and so stiff (vs the actual trailer weight) that I will bounce my trailer to death from being underloaded for the tires? I am thinking the LR D tires will suffice, but wanted to get opinions on experienced folks.

My Montana HC came with Rainier LR E tires, but on wheels rated for 110 psi. The only thing I noticed going from 80 psi to 110 psi with a stronger sidewall is the 5er held the road better and found nothing bounced in the 5er, no cabinet doors opened~~ nothing negative.

Last time I checked the LRE tires were $77 at WalMart vs $96 at DT.

ST tires "degrade" about 10% per year in load capacity, so you may be at 11,360 when you install them but this time next year you'll be minus 1,136, and so on until your tires "age out" or "wear out"... With the LRD tires you'll also degrade 10% per year and reach your "pumpkin number" (when the tires fall below the weight of your trailer) much faster.

As for the stiffer tires causing problems? It's been my experience that with the 80 PSI LRE tires ride smoother than the previous LRD tires at 65PSI. At least there's less movement of cargo inside the trailer. There are several people who have upgraded from LRD's to LRE's on the forum that all say about the same thing: Trailer ride is smoother and it seems to pull easier with LRE tires on it.

Thanks JRTJH. I am not seing any LR E Carlisles on Wal-Mart.com right now (Just the LR D tires). If they were there that would be an easy decision as I could get DT to match that.

Interesting that the LR E tires carry smoother. That doesn't surprise me on the big 5ers which weigh so much more, but is a bit surprising on lighter units. Hopefully Wal-Mart will show some LR E tires soon so I can get DT to match. Not too excited about paying them $96/tire. Tire Rack doesn't show any Carlisle HDs either.

And of course not 5 minutes after I posted this, I found the LR E tires at Wal-Mart for $67 each. Wonder if Discount will match that low price...

If they wont match the price ask them how much they'd charge to mount and balance them if you buy them at WM and bring them in for mounting.... Chances are it's still cheaper than the base tire price at $96 each......

Yeah, the would likely charge me the same fee for mounting and balancing that I would pay if I bought them at DT to begin with (I think it is $16/tire). Their mounting/balancing fee is pretty standard regardless of application. I may have to do that.

One of the comments under the LR E tire at WalMart says ordering online is the way to go and they got some Carlisles that were only a few weeks old when they ordered them on line, vs in the store which was much more negative. DT did confirm today they would mount/balance anything I bring in.

^^^^ This is what I did earlier this year. I upgraded both wheels and tires to help with load reserve capacities. My tires where 'up-sized' to 225 75 15 LRD. The biggest hiccup was acquiring tires that had relatively newer DOT dates. Discount Tire matched both Amazon and Walmart's pricing but their inventory was old. DOT was approximately 12 months old so I refused that set. My second attempt was with Amazon. Same thing: stale (albeit new) tires with a year of warehouse time. Third time wasn't a charm either as Walmart.com sent similarly dated tires.

After three merchants were unable to get a "newer" batch, I decided to try the higher LRE tire. Started with Walmart.com. They arrived at a local store for pickup. Bam! Only 12 weeks old, not 54 like the rest.

The next challenge was finding a tire center that could mount and balance trailer tires in the "Lug centric" fashion. The DT's, Pep Boy's, Wallyworld's, Firestone's, and independents in my area didn't own the lug wheel balancing adapters. I must have called 10 places. I finally found a Belle Tire store that had the adapters and paid a premium over the "other guys".

Now, my reserves are north of 50% and the wheels are properly balanced.

Thanks for the info- I actually got the idea about upgrading after reading another tire thread you commented on and provided some links to. I did not realize you went with the LR E tires. We have nearly the same size trailer- the LR Es work well with yours?

I am not too worried about balacning methods; if the shop does it correctly the wheel will be fine. A hige part of good balancing is good tires that want to balance.
