Question Holding Tank Full Light: How much room left?

I'm sure this has been discussed before but i can't find the topic.

After the full light first comes on for the black water, is there still room? Or dump immediately?

The sensors are notoriously unreliable. How long to wait to dump depends on your tank size and usage, but you should have a fair bit of time yet. Your right, there are hundreds of threads/ opinions on when/ how to dump. RV toilets don't use a lot of water, guessing less than a 1/2 gals per flush, if you have a 40 gal tank, that's 80 flushes.
I keep an eye down hole, and dump when convient so I do not have any too full events at night or first thing in the am. If you have the opportunity, at least one time, use your black tank until it is quite obvious that it is full, will help you guage it for the future.

We've been "full" on more than one occasion. When we're dry camping we find the black tank to be the limiting factor for how many days we can stay in the field. So to your question, yes, there is a certain amount of "headroom" from when the light says full and when you actually see fluids when flushing. I'm sure how much varies by model and design. We consider the indicator light a fair warning. Not an absolute emergency but not to be ignored either.
Note, many on this forum do not trust their indicators at all. And, many have indicators that provide false readings. Ours happen to work as designed and have been dependable for us. YMMV

After a few black tank fills your sensor may read "full" all the time. You're better off looking, listening & learning when you flush than relying on the sensors.
The fresh water & grey water sensors MIGHT be more accurate, but don't bet the farm on it.

If the toilet burps when flushed you need to dump.

Yep, this is an I'm full and going to make a big mess next time you flush situation. Consider it a warning and go dump immediately.
