Slide out motor after connecting battery in reverse
I think my slide out motor might be fried after connecting the battery in reverse. Is there anything I should check before I remove and bring it into a motor repair shop?

Why do you think it’s fried? Your converter should have fuses to protect against reverse battery polarity.

Thanks for the info sdayman ! I'm not much of an electrician, however I quickly looked at the fuses on the converter and didn't see any marked as such. I will try pulling them one by one and examining them. When I hooked up the cables in reverse it did blow 2 - 40 (?) Amp fuses and the fuse behind the stereo unit. Maybe there are others that blew. Looking under my TT it appeared the battery was connected directly to the slide motor which I thought was very strange. It is a 2011 Hideout 38 BHDS.

Look in your fuse panel, You should have two 30 amp 12 volt fuses just to the left of where the other 12 volt fuses are. These should have blown when it was connected wrong.

If you follow the positive (+) lead from your battery, there should be a 30A auto reset breaker located in close proximity to it. You might want to inspect this.

Do you mean that the breaker should be located under the TT somewhere ? or on the converter itself?

There are usually some boxes the positive cable runs through on its way to the converter. Some of these are junctions while others have fuses/breakers and such. Follow the cable, starting at the battery.

I looked under the trailer and I see 2 junction blocks just after the battery, but then the cable continues on directly to the motor. I don't see fuses or breakers anywhere

There possibly could be a fusable link, sometimes these are not easy to spot. Or maybe there is an electronically-controlled solenoid that operates the motor that isn't getting it's control signal. In any event it's doubtful you fried the motor itself as usually reverse-polarity won't hurt them, in fact often polarity is used to select forward/reverse motion and there isn't even a necessarily 'correct' polarity. You may well have knocked out some electronics but even there it's not likely there is any permanent damage, just some fuse(s) or circuit breaker(s) somewhere that need to be tended to.

Just got of the phone with Keystone and they say there are no fuses protecting the slide motor. The fellow I was talking to said there is probably damage to the slide motor.................just my luck !!!!

I'm looking at the wiring diagram for our Lippert slideout and; unless I am not reading this correctly, I see a 30A auto reset breaker in the positive line between the motor and the switch. While not a "fuse" as such, doesn't it act in the same way to protect the motor?
There is also a note there that says, "Change of polarity reverses motor", so perhaps hooking it up backwards did not, by itself, do any damage ????

Here is the website for Lippert:
www.lci1.com
You'll have to find the right slideout and download the corresponding Operation and Service Manual.
Also, you might want to check with someone more knowledgeable than I am whether or not those two electrical components -- a fuse and an auto reset breaker, although different, perform the same function - or whether they are two entirely different species.

:Hi billy1 as everyone is telling you there is a fuse/circut breaker in that line. No manufacturer would run a hot line with out protection. like they all said. start at the positve post at the batteryfallow along till you come to a juction block that is where you will find the breaker /fuse. it has to be there!

Thanks saabdoctor.
I'll have a look in the coming days. It's funny that keystone themselves said it was not protected but everyone here says it should be. Hopefully it is protected and keystone is wrong !

I was able to get out to the travel trailer and have a look for the breakers again. I came across two on the front, however they look like auto reset breakers (they don't have any reset tabs on the side). I disconnected the shore power and I was still getting power inside the camper, so I assume that the breaker on the left is functioning properly (the left one goes inside the camper after it leaves the breaker). Is it possible the right breaker is fried? The right breaker goes to the slide motor.

SURE is possable. if it is bad you will have power on the battery side and no power on the other pole. if that is the case auto reset didnot! you can get one at a good auto parts or rv store. they are 30 amp breakers. hope that solvesall your issues. stay cool
