Military Base RV parks

Just wondering if anyone has used them and what the requirements are for users. I am a Canadian veteran wondering if I qualify as a veteran in America.

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life wrote a blank check made payable for an amount of 'up to and including my life'. You only walk this Earth once, make sure your tracks are deep.

In the US, military parks are limited to active duty military and those who have retired after 20 years. Most "veterans" in the US who served their 2, 4 or 6 year terms don't qualify. If you were a 20 year veteran in Canada, you might want to check with the particular site you're looking at to see if they will let you in.

As a USAF retiree, I've used a few over the years. They're a great benefit for DoD affiliated personnel. Most are only for US military personnel, but I have seen a few that are open to civilians.
https://www.militarycampgrounds.us/ is a good resource. If nothing els, find a number and call, worst they can say is no.
Happy camping

Remember that many FamCamp facilities are located on the military installation. Those require a user to meet specific security and identification requirements to even drive through the gate and onto the facility. Depending on the installation, you may not be able to even get your tow vehicle/trailer through the gate, even with reservations.

An example, is the FamCamp at Wright/Patterson AFB, OH, which is located behind the C-17 parking ramp, off the end of the active runway. To get to the FamCamp requires you to drive through the military base, along the aircraft parking and maintenance areas, around the active runway and then to the FamCamp. The entire base is restricted to military ID card holders, their escorted guests and other people, as authorized by the installation commander. The last time I was there, my retired military ID card was not the "updated format" and the security police would not accept my ID (even though I am a retired USAF member). Had it not been for my DW being in the vehicle with an "updated ID with the correct format" who could vouch for my entry as her guest, We could not have entered the facility.

I very much doubt that a Canadian veteran without proper authorization from their government and authorized by the installation commander would be allowed to enter Wright/Patterson AFB.

So, you very likely would not be able to use the FamCamp, even if you did get reservations through MWR's website or phone reservation system. You simply couldn't get onbase to use the FamCamp.

Check first, before you make reservations, to be sure you can even get through the gate !!!!!

Without a privilege to use US Military CGs it is necessary to contact the manager of the military CG you want to use. That's normally the base commander's MWR Program.

A lot of off base facilities will allow guests with MWR guest passes. Admiral Baker recreational complex at San Diego or Short Stay at Moncks, Corner, SC have liberal guest rules. The Corpus Christi Naval Air Station in south Texas will allow guests that have applied for and received a MWR CG pass for that base. That RV Park is on base.

Bottom line, do some "homework".

Making a reservation with MRW has no relation to access to the Base. MRW asks what your status is i.e. Active, Retired, DOD, etc.. If you answer to their satisfaction they will make the reservation and even send it to the front gate. Once you get to the gate you now have to prove you're authorized access. If rejected at the gate, saying MWR made the reservation therefore....won't work. As has been stated, do your homework for each and every Base you want to utilize. Every branch/base likely will have different criteria.

All you can do is ask if you can reserve a spot.

I've stayed at the base on NAS Whidbey Island and loved it.

I've been using them for years as well. I never heard of that website. I've always used https://www.dodlodging.net/ to check for availability and make reservations.

Military FamCamps

I believe that U.S Veteran's with service-connected disabilities may also use FamCamps on military installations. Not sure how that would apply to veterans of allied countries.

We had a very nice stay at Shaw AFB, SC when the daughter was visiting for a five-week conference. My VA Medical Card got me right in. Granted I don't know how that will apply to other installations, but it pays to ask first.
