I started out RV shopping looking at a Class A because that is what we had growing up and what was familiar to me. I very quickly realized that a truck + trailer would offer me far more utility and be considerably cheaper (seriously, like 1/2 the price with a top of the line truck and trailer vs a mid range Class A). A fifth wheel will actually have considerably more living space than a Class A due to:

-more slides
-deeper slides (since the space does not have to be usable while in transit - unlike a Class A)
-The entire thing front to back is living area, no space lost to the cockpit, also many more floorplan options

With the truck + trailer combo you also get a truck out of it, can be very handy even when not camping. Really the only things you are "missing" are access to the sofa and bathroom while literally rolling down the highway (quickly available on the side of the road with a trailer) and insane cargo capacity. No way around that 2nd one, a Class A has a ridiculous amount of space and weight capacity to hold stuff - whether you need it all or not is another thing.

Something else to consider - RVs, any type, depreciate like rocks. With a motorcoach (Class, A/B/C) this is even worse since they are both an RV AND a Vehicle. While you WILL take a hit trading a trailer, it is not as bad, and on a smaller priced item. When you want a new floorplan, you only have to upgrade your trailer, the truck is "reusable" when you make a change assuming you have a right sized truck.
