Chevy towing capacity

I just saw a video about the 2020 Chevy HD trucks. The trucks look pretty nice but what I found the most interesting was Chevy is now putting a sticker inside the passenger side door with the payload number and the max towing number specific for that truck. It will be interesting to see how helpful that is for people new to towing or to help people figure out what they can tow.

Unless you happen to be big into 15 minute Chevy commercials, just go to the 8:35 part and away you go....

Very interesting they are now designating a "max tongue weight" for Gooseneck (and I assume fifth wheel?) which should help put the debate to rest about "can my truck tow x" and also prevent a lot of "uninformed" 3/4 ton owners pulling way oversized fifth wheels.

Thanks for linking to this. I will watch the whole thing when I get home, but flipped to the time stamp and have a couple comments.

Brochure numbers (that I can't find anymore) put the payload at just under 4K for the gas 2500 CC. So real world is about 600 lbs lighter (and I swear they have pulled these numbers off the online brochure), but the diesel is only slightly less.

Still considering an upgrade once the bugs are worked out (and see if the 2021 has more than a 6 sp for gas).

They have actually published a lot of data already on capacities, even breaking out gas vs diesel (hopefully the page below is for Diesel AND Denali, not a Diesel stripper)

Still nothing for the SLE/SLT. The page is for Denali and they have that or the AT4 numbers out.

Yeah, same info. Not sure why but they only have info on the higher trim levels right now.

Not a biggie as I'm not looking until next year. I want to see these things get a year under them first. I had the first year of the Duramax and had to change injectors. PITA because of a poor design (not fixed until 2004.5) so I'd like to see real life issues and fuel economy first before making up my mind.

I would say that is a good strategy. I just bought a 2019 and will revisit in 2-3 years once the new gen is well established and smoothed out.

I think all vehicle manufactures should adopt. If nothing else the big three for pickups. You notice max pin is about 900# less than total payload, which most can't figure out. Many think the payload is how much the pin can weigh, and every thing is free weight.

It would be nice to have a standardized rating system that all vehicle manufacturers follow so we could do a "1:1 comparison"....

I don't think that's going to happen, if it did then they couldn't advertise "best in class" and "fabricate a class to meet their best"... Classes such as "best 7 passenger SUV" or "best truck with a GVW rating less than 8500" or best truck with a GVW rating under 8200" all of which have been "fabricated classes" for "best in categories" in the past few years....

I'm not sure how the SAE J2807 ratings are calculated, but the maximum gooseneck trailer weight and maximum gooseneck tongue weight calculates out to a 15% tongue. That's rated at the "lightest recommended pin weight" in all the "towing recommendations" that I've seen. The max trailer weight/tongue weight also are at the ilghtest, 10%.

While the max trailer ratings and the max tongue/pin ratings are not "wrong" they provide for the "heaviest possible trailer with the lightest recommended tongue"... IMHO, that's optimistic, rose colored glasses expectations. Sort of like calculating towing weights using the shipping weight and empty tongue weight to "make sure the tow vehicle is strong enough".....

Yeah, they started these stickers on their 1/2 ton trucks. Great idea that all rigs should have!

Isn’t strange for tongue weight to be used for gooseneck and 5th wheel’s.

Gooseneck would come under payload and for 5th wheel as pin weight / hitch as payload.

Did everyone notice the following:
GCWR 24,000
Max goose 16,600
That leaves just 7,400
Curb weight is 7,280
That leaves 120 for passengers, gear in truck and bed of truck, hitch, and pin weight.
A more realistic approach is
GCWR 24,000
TV GWR -10,650
Allowed trailer 13,350
20% pin wt -2,670
Payload 3,370
Leaves 700 for passengers, junk in truck, junk in bed of truck, hitch and a few pounds left over

I have an older 2003 Cougar 5er and a Lance 915 truck camper. Based on the info provided on the stickers I can plan to use a new 3500 Denali truck to carry any truck camper made today. I wonder why they didn't list the total weight limit for a truck camper? Truck campers are part of the market and many of us like to use them and tow our toys (boat, Jeep, trailer with toys).

It's right on the sticker. Payload is 3,370. From that number subtract the weight of people and any stuff in the truck cab. The Lance 650, 825, and 850 would be ok as long as you didn't load the 850 too much otherwise you are in dually country. The top of the line Lance is 4,174. That is equivalent to the 20% pin weight of a 20,870 lb fifth wheel. That's heavy!
