Replacing plumbing vent......

Good morning,

After busting the vent with the shovel this spring while removing snow, it needs to be replaced. How to I get the self leveling caulking off? Can I use a heat gun?? Hot sun hasn't been around this year....

Thanks....

You can use a heat gun, or just do what we do and use a plastic putty knife. You don't have to get all the old dicor off, just clean and you can apply more right on top of it.

Just a suggestion if you are changing the vent cap anyway there are better ones than the stock one they put. Something like this. https://www.amazon.ca/Camco-40597-Bl...46971080&psc=1

I don't have a plastic scraper, but what about this 6" metal one. Should lessen the chance of any damage?

It will work just fine. Just be careful not to nick the membrane.

Personally I would go with chuckster's first suggestion. Buy a plastic one and round off the corners. Very easy to nick the membrane. YMMV

X3!
Don't know how far the nearest store is, but $15 in fuel is a lot cheaper than tearing the roof membrane, just go buy one and keep it in your trailer tool box.

I have to agree with those above. Get the plastic scraper. Costs next to nothing and a metal scraper will cut that membrane very easily. I carry 3 plastic scrapers of different sizes in my travel tool box and 2 in the trailer.

The plastic scraper is nice to have if you have to remove any sealant from the siding also.

Good point....

I'm using this Dicor product. How long does it have to set b4 exposed to moisture? Sez nothing on the tube...

Another "must have" addition to the RV tool box is plastic razor blades.... Yes, PLASTIC razor blades. Almost all of us have a razor blade paint scraper that we use with single edge razor blades to clean paint off windows and to scrape "stuff" around the house. Plastic razor blades, (about $5 per 100) are much less prone to damage FILON siding, TPO roofing and fiberglass front caps.

Here's just one place to get them. I keep a pack of 100 in the trailer and a pack of 100 in the pole barn (my workshop).

That stuff is gooey a lot longer than 30 days. I’ve upgraded vents on new (6 Mo old) units and it’s a messy job.

That membrane is thin.... Nope, didn't tear it. Drove 50 miles round trip for $2 worth of plastic scrapers. It all went well..
