Newbie from Houston TEXAS

Houston TEXAS area newbie checking in. Just bought a new to us (used) 2009 Keystone Challenger 34SAQ. So far seems to be well taken care of and rarely used by the previous owner. Everything seems to be working as it should so far.

But..... Had a blowout on our first trip. Right rear trailer tire. The tires I believe were original Goodyear Marathons built in 2008. Did a little damage to the passenger side. I was able to repair it pretty well though.

I wound up replacing all 5 tires (spare too) with new GY Marathons built dates of December 2012... hopefully that's not an omen! LOL! If these new ones blow too I'll be exploring other tire options.

Anyway... Here to learn and share.

Welcome and congrats. Good luck with the tires, might have been because they sat around some. Be sure you have the currect pressure.

RV tires do not like heat, driving too fast, low pressure, getting old and too much weight in the trailer. So it would seem best to keep the speed down to the 55 MPH range, check the cold PSI of the tires each day on the road, do not overload the trailer and when at a stop feel the truck tires for heat and then the trailer, they should be about the same. Running you're hand around the tire tread and give them a good look before hitting the road.

I would replace all of the tires on any trailer that I bought that was pre-owned. Trailer tires are always questionable, more-so if you don't know how they were inflated and run by a previous owner. It doesn't take that long to damage a tire that was run hot from under inflation, and the damage probably isn't visible.

I check my tires before every trip. It's a good habit to get into. That's why I carry an air compressor. Also, don't forget to check the spare. It's easy to pass it up thinking that it never hits the ground so it should be fine, plus it's a PITA to pull the cover off. Pull the cover off and check it. That may mean the difference between getting to the next town or not.

Welcome fellow Texan! I hope you enjoy your new trailer as much as we have. We just got back from a trip to Canton (southeast of Dallas) for their First Monday Trade Days...tons of fun and highly recommended. Enjoy!

Thanks for the welcomes everyone.

I'm hoping the new set of tires (including spare) will give me trouble free miles for a while. Although after reading all the horror stories about ST tires I have my doubts.

I'm a little OCD when it comes to preventative stuff, so hopefully watching the tires closely will help avoid future blowouts.

I plan to keep my speeds around the 60-65mph range. I did come across this though... something to consider...

Never been to Canton. Will have to look into that.

Our first trip was to Cedar Hill State Park which is just south of Dallas though. Small world huh.
