Another annoyance solved

Vinyl straps to secure the sliding pocket doors have been a nuisance since ownership. The doors shake and sometimes dismount from the overhead track when traveling, even when the straps are buttoned down. Problem solved...sash locks.

Now that I think about it...as the RV selling industry is outpacing itself from service centers, the void for independent shops is obvious. What a business opportunity for someone who has a passion for RVs and can help a community growing exponentially. The rewards for these new businesses can be enormous, especially if quality of work and turn-around time supersedes the stealerships.
The place I store my RV here in Lafayette IN is swamped all summer long fixing RVs and selling parts. Great people to deal with and reasonably priced as I have them service mine and do a few things from time to time.

Just installed mine too. What a great easy MOD!

Thanks for sharing all your ideas, even though the DW isn't liking you too much right now.

MORryde Wet Bolt kit install

Two weeks ago while pulling into a campground, we we're flagged down by a fellow camper who let us know we we're dragging a broken leaf spring. I was able to get the broken spring off and welded allowing me to pull the trailer home. Forward 12 days, Dexter stood behind their axle warranty and shipped me out 2 new leaf springs, ubolts and hardware. A full upgrade to 5200 lb axles, springs, hangers, tires and wheels is in order. But it will happen after next season as I have 1 more season left on the tires and wheels.

In the mean time, I was able to score a very good deal on a MORryde wet bolt kit from Amazon warehouse. Trailer is now fixed with the addition of the wet bolts and "massive" shackles. Took it for a quick ride around local roads and most of the suspension squeaks are gone, especially at slow turning speeds.

The kit I purchased was the MORryde UO12-016 for anyone looking to upgrade. All of the nylon bushings had wore to a point of showing some metal. Now that I did the install, I would say this was a worthy and necessary upgrade. As long as the leaf springs don't fail again, I'll end up having the forementioned axles and suspension components retrofitted on my coach in 2020.

It happened sooner than later...

Another leaf spring failed shortly after my previous post was made. So, instead of one more problematic season, I decided to upgrade the axles, leaf springs, wheels, tires, hangers, and hardware. Axles are nos 5200# Dexters and the wheels are 6 lugs supporting 80 PSI and 2830 lbs of load. The shop that did the work recommended hanger/equalizer reinforcing cross members be added along the undercarriage....similar to how many dump trailers are constructed. This will help support the hangers and equalizers, especially in a wide axle design due to the stresses placed on this hardware during tight turning maneuvers. I'm extremely pleased with the final result. The trailer sits about 5 inches higher above the axles, offering a bit more clearance and overall height. Unfortunately, we may need larger stabilizer jacks now.

The 12 inch brakes are massive compared to what was on the 3500 lb axle hub and drum assembly. After a 20 mile test trip to "seat-in" the new brakes, the gain on my RAM's FBC was reduced from 7.5 to 4 to offer smooth, consistent braking. Pulling (and stopping) this coach will be safer now. We officially test it in 2 weeks on our last trip of the season (a halloween camping weekend).

Battery Upgrade Completed

6 volt GC2 batteries in series as an upgrade to the dealer-supplied Interstate group 24 "dual purpose" 12 volt battery. What was pidley at 64 amp-hours has now transformed into a satisfying, 215. Added a water tight electrical box to house the new battery switch. The old switch was exposed to the elements and was being finicky.

Nice. Exactly the same battery mod I want to do to mine I hear the 6 volts are taller. Did you get new battery boxes if so what was your source? in addition to the cut off switch I want to wire in a 1.5 amp automatic charger so I can isolate and keep the batteries charged in storage.

Wow! Lots of good mods/upgrades. I have a brand new 22RBS, and have installed 2 deep cycle 12v batteries in a nice cargo tub I found at Canadian Tire. Have yet to install an true isolation switch and wire in a lead for a macerator.

I like the sewer hose storage idea.

Thanks for sharing all your ideas and pics of the finished projects.

Yes, the GC2 batteries stand about 2 inches taller. The battery boxes fit nice and snug in the battery rack welded to the bottom of the A-frame. I bought them from Walmart for about $9.00 each. I attempted to install a tongue box but there was too much fabrication required to make it happen before a big 4000 mile trip that's quickly approaching. I store my trailer on an RV storage lot so there there is no electric for a smart charger. That would be nice though vs lugging them back to the house.

You may have already considered this, if so, it may help someone else. If you're storing at a facility where you have to carry batteries back and forth, building/buying a "multiple battery box" that looks nice on the trailer tongue may not be the most versatile and usable arrangement. If all your batteries are in one box, then you'll need to either carry them home "exposed and maybe with acid that will get in your truck" or buy a second set of boxes for transportation. Not to mention that you'll have to pick up multiple batteries (extremely heavy and maybe impossible to lift by hand) if you try to transport in a single "neat looking box"....

I found that when transporting batteries, having them in "single boxes" makes the most sense from a handling standpoint.

I've got a "NORCO dual battery box" sitting in the pole barn that just is too much trouble to use because it weighs too much with the batteries in it and if I'm going to take them out of that box, I need single boxes to transport them, so it's just easier to use them in single boxes that serve all the needs. YMMV

Could a solar charger keep them topped off at the lot so you don't need to pull them? Possibly keep them charged through the cold so they survive the winter in the elements.

I've got a couple of solar LED lights in the pole barn. We find that they work well as long as the solar collection panel is clear of snow. Up here (not the same in warmer areas) once the snow flies and starts to stick, the solar collection panels get covered with snow and stop working. Even when installed on an angle, once the roof drifts over, electricity stops flowing.... Parking an RV in a storage yard where there's snow may be "iffy" when it comes to depending on solar to keep an expensive battery bank charged. I know it wouldn't work "up here" during the winter without some active snow clearing to keep the panels open to sunlight.

Thanks John. I did indeed think of that before I purchased the single Norco boxes. As a matter of fact, I bought that Norco dual battery box from Amazon but returned it as I would have had to mount it "permanently" by retrofitting the battery rack. If I were to do that, I'd prefer to install a metal tongue box. The single boxes are easily removable if needed. Plus, I carry one of these:

With the lifting strap, I can keep the battery boxes empty on the trailer to keep shield the cable ends/lugs from the weather. Furthermore, during the camping season, the trailer is active at least once a month. So in reality, the batteries would only be transported twice a year, at season's end and prior to the start. I'd also prefer them to be in our climate controlled basement on a smart charger when Michigan turns into the arctic tundra.

John was right, devoted battery solar panels aren't a reliable option in the upper midwest as you're always contending with snow buildup in the winter. Too much trouble to keep panels cleaned off.

Thanks guys.
I store my trailer on another piece of family property a couple blocks away, so I guess I am lucky that I have access to power just not lucky enough to have space to park it at my house. The reason for the charger is so I don't have to pull the batteries out for the winter and have them take up space in the garage. Solar is not really a viable option up here in the winter due to lack of daylight. I keep my trailer roof pretty clean in the winter though.

I picked up one of those rotary switches (the one you put in the waterproof box) late last year but haven't installed it yet. Does it need that waterproof box? Do you have a link to that box model?
