Exhaust melting front of 5er Modification
My 2017 2500 Duramax is starting to melt the front corner of my Raptor 332TS. The engine regens often at temps of 1000+ and the exhaust tip angle is just right to hit it. Until an exhaust upgrade that I like is evaluable I made a heat shield to hopefully protect it. I cut it out of aluminum diamond plate and left a small air gap in-between it. I will be pulling it in the mountains this week so I should know if it helps or if I need some type of insulation in there. See attached photos.

Nice job. Looks good. Did you match it in the other side. Mine gets pretty dinged up in that area from road debris also. Like the idea.

Thanks, I would have but didn't have enough material. Will probably get more and match it.

That looks really sharp. Yeah, I would do the other side to match, otherwise it would look a little funny.

Was parked next to an Artic Fox the other day and the whole lower section is diamond plate. I was thinking it’s a mod I’d like to do for my Alpine. Seems like a way better way to do the fronts of these 5th wheels. Yours looks great

That one is on my list. Seems like that would be a great factory option.

Our first travel trailer had the diamond plate rock guard across the front about 2 or 3 ft up from the bottom (2008 Skyline Nomad). Looked pretty sharp I thought, I guess the manufacturers don't do this anymore due to costs.

A lot of manufacturers are now using one piece fiberglass type front caps and coating the lower part with a product similar to the rock guard we used to use on the lower parts of vehicles.( may still be done). So no need for checker plate. But 5ers may be a bit more difficult.

On many "recent model RV's" (2010 and newer) the aluminum or steel "diamond plate" was replaced by a plastic version. The manufacturers claimed "weight reduction" as the reason. My guess is that along with weight, the "thick tape that looks like diamond plate" is also much cheaper. As for "melting", well, plastic melts as fast as (or faster than) fiberglass, so appearances can be deceiving, so tap on that diamond plate and ask, "Is it real or is it Memorex????"
