Jackson MS Camping

Looking to camp near Jackson MS March 12-16. Just got cancelled out of LaFleur State Park due to flooding. Looking for a couple of sites for 30 ft units. Recommendations appreciated.

Dave, have you ever been to Jackson? Are you going for business, pleasure or other?

Have not been there? Going there to visit civil rights historical sites. Found a place to camp east of Jackson, Askew, I believe. So we are set for a campsite.

Thanks for getting back to me.

All I found was Askew's Landing west of Jackson. I was just going to advise that depending on the route it is congested and the roads either bad or under construction - particularly if you hit hwy. 49 headed S. I20 is not bad as long as you don't go to LA. Also take care of yourself, it has one of the highest rates of crime of any city in the country.

I've stayed at a couple of campgrounds in Vicksburg to the west of Jackson.

If it fits for OP we stay at Rivertown campground in Vicksburg MS a couple of times a year. Nice place, nice sites. Been transforming over the last 2-3 years but a good, safe place to stay.

Don't intend to hijack Dave, but since he found a site at Askew (post #3) - - -

I will be traveling I-20 between Tyler, TX and central GA the third week of April.
Jackson seemed like a good mid-point to overnight without driving the whole darn trip with a long 10-11-12 hour day. Just need a place to park overnight and get some sleep. I was planning on using something like Boondockers Welcome to find something or maybe just a freeway truck stop but - - - - - -
if Jackson is too sketchy of a place, maybe continuing on to Meridian or some other spot would be wiser.

Any suggestions?

I guess it depends on your timeline and how you like to drive. At about 6 hours we want to shut down.

For me the only way I would overnight in Jackson is if it was a touch and go and never needed to go anywhere (or breakdown). We're through there at least 2 times a year.

I mentioned Vicksburg, which we like, because I always wander around the Civil War sites, see the USS Cairo exhibit etc. Walmart is just down the road and it's quiet....but only a bit over 4 hours from Tyler. Meridian is pushing 7 hours or more best I can tell and that may work for you but a bit long for us usually (not stayed there). Been a while since I ran I20 past Jackson since DD moved to FL so not up to date on parks past there.

Stay in Tyler every year. Kind of moved to Tyler Oaks but have stayed at Tyler Rose as well. RV dealerships (read repair parts) are on the highway to Tyler Oaks - had to buy a new CO detector that wouldn't stop squawking 2-3 years ago at the RV dealership across the road from the entrance to Tyler Oaks.

I'm an hour west of tyler and I've also found Vicksburg to be a timely stop. I've also tried state parks I louisiana.

For the 'I was just curious' crowd:

"With a crime rate of 50 per one thousand residents, Vicksburg has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 20."

Sleep well....

Yogi on the Lake is east of Jackson. It`s a nice campground but expensive but right off I20 in Pelahatchie. Not far from Jackson and out of the Rife. There is a small campground located in the petrified forest North and west of Jackson. Askew landing has made some great upgrades and I plan to check them out. It has some civil war history behind it.

This is one of frequent stops when transiting that area.

STAY AWAY FROM I-49 Below Jackson it has been terrible for years.....

Perhaps you are referring to I-55? I-49 runs south from Shreveport.

You are correct, US 49, not I-49.

You are 100% on the money. Cannot remember in the last 10 years that 49 was even sort of decent. The work on it moves so slow (over the last time period mentioned) and still not even getting decent is mind boggling.

Traveled all around like most of us and seen some stellar road rebuilding but that section in MS is lost in the dark ages it seems.

we used to travel that way from KC to Dauphin Island, AL. Now we go through Tupelo and down 45.

Jackson and Vicksburg camping

We have camped at both places...

Before the pandemic we stopped at La Fleurs State Park near Jackson for a couple of days... It was lovely, and very convenient to the city. We toured the State capitol building, and it was most informative and enjoyable (Author John Grisham served as a representative there). We have camped a couple of times in Vicksburg near downtown and the river (Ameristar and Quillys, both fine). The history around Vicksburg and the battlefield will keep anyone busy for several days... an amazing and beautiful area.

Mississipi is maybe the poorest state in the nation, but they are not short on hospiltality.

Bob.
