Domestic fridge

When traveling to campsite we have fridge on auto. We left it there while dry camping. Twice during trip check light came on. We started up generator and it went off.

Should we not keep it on auto?
When does one switch to gas?

are saying DOMESTIC as in residential fridge or are you trying to say DOMETIC as in the brand of fridge in your unit? if yours is a residential (domestic) fridge then you do not have propane and it will only work on electric power. now if its a dometic rv fridge. if you look at your control panel it should have a button you can push that will manually put it in LPG mode. make sure your tanks are on and you can hear it from outside of the vent on the side of your RV if the pilot light is lighting and all that. hope this helps

In Auto, the fridge should switch to 120v power if it is available and to propane if it is not. If you do not have the propane tank valves open, or the fridge can’t keep the flame lit, you will get the check light. Check to see if there is propane to the fridge, check to see if the igniter is working, check to see if the flame is being blown out by the moving vehicle wind. Are your propane tanks full?

I personally set it on LP when I leave the house so keep things cold on the drive and it stays in LP mode until I get to the camp ground and if the place has power I will put it on auto.

I’m lazy/absent-minded and just leave it in Auto.

Fire up the burners on your cooktop to purge gas through the system, if it's been parked not use for a while you'll probably have to do this every time, turn your fridge to "auto" & no need to ever change it.

Watch out for that 120v affinity if dry camping AND you have a "whole house" inverter OR turn off the breaker for the fridge OR make sure it is set to GAS. On 120v your batteries will run dry very quickly. Been there done that. Fridge goes on gas AND Breaker gets turned off when I unplug from home. We do more dry camping than resort/full hook-up (personal pref).

You said the "check" lite comes on when on LP when set to auto. If I recall, they are supposed to. If mine is set to auto and I disconnect AC power the yellow/orange light comes on solid telling me it is on LP. If there is a problem with LP the light will flash. When traveling I always just peer into the trailer and look at the light to make sure my LP hasn't failed. A green one on top and the yellow/orange under it.

Ours used to blow out a lot, driving down the road... I would check it every time we stopped and the check light would be flashing.

I extended the shroud around the burner and that helped, but it gets blown out some times.

Since the check lite goes out when you start generator what is the condition of the DC battery. If under volts control panel won’t work correctly and you will have an issue.

Also when is the last time you cleaned the LP. burner for the fridge.

I had a similar problem with my fridge on the gas or Auto setting not staying lite while dry camping. I thought it was because we were at 5k altitude, but as it turned out, I had a bad propane gas regulator. I changed the regulator and now run the fridge on gas at 8k feet. Works perfect!! And btw, the unit was only a year old, so the regulator must have been a lemon when installed.

RV Fridges

Please do not have the propane on during travel. Lots of RV fires happen that way!

With all the safety features that have been put in place, I wouldn’t have any reservations about operating my fridge during travel. Only caveat is while fueling up.

I have a new cougar 25res and when I had on auto and disconnected the check lite came on a wouldn’t go off. Also it wouldn’t run on gas or even fire up. It turned out to be a bad circuit board. They replaced it and no more problems. Don’t know if this helps or not.

Thanks! We actually tried changing our circuit board with no results. We so far, are traveling in Auto..then changing to LP when we dry camp. We will be dry camping tonight so we'll see if it works.

The "check" light came on while you were driving, not at the camp?
We've never had a problem leaving on Auto. Makes the switch from AC to propane with no trouble.
If the flame blew out, ignition should restart the flame. If it relights quickly enough, the "check" light doesn't come on.
The only time we have had the "check" light come on is when we ran out of propane, or the gas line hadn't been purged after sitting for months.
