As my signature indicates, I'm from the Fraser Valley and our first trip is scheduled at the end of March and our destination is Texas. We seldom go into the Okanagan in the summer since we have found it too busy -- too crowded. If we do venture inland, it is often into the Merritt or Kamloops area - Logan Lake, Tunkwa, Leighton or Lac La Jeune and vicinity.

We are in the Lower Mainland as well, and the first trip was two weekends ago to Golden Ears... next one is Friday to Birch Bay...

No use wasting the winter

from BC

We live on Vancouver Island. We are originally from MB, but came west due to wanting to retire somewhere with a more favorable climate. The island is great but because we are 52'ft long when all hooked up it costs us a fortune to go/come off the island. So last summer (2012) we took the trip of the lifetime to the east coast (loved it) and spent 3 months away. Now we are permanent at Jingle Pot CG in Nanaimo & want to purchase a used slide in camper so we can pack up & go somewhere else. We are FTers in HOWie.

Anyone who has taken their RV on the ferry to the Island soon finds out just how costly it is. The last time we took our Cougar over, the round trip set us back about $450. Since then, the rates have gone up so we won't be going over again any time soon. It hurts somewhat less if you are planning to go over for an extended stay. A few days just doesn't justify the costs involved.

The Island is a beautiful place but the ferry costs for an RV just make it too rich for most.

Festus2 - X2 on the beauty of Vancouver - used to deliver produce to Victoria and sometimes over the hill to Duncan - used to to take the MV Coho out of Port Angeles. FWIW - spoke with a Canadian gentleman recently. He told me that the Anacortes ferry over to the island had a cheaper rate on Wednesdays - something like $125 one way?

Picked up my rig last week. An extra 150$ one way to Powell river. Guess I will have to my out of town trips count.

We are from Vancouver Island , used to have a house in Victoria. Now full timing, spending the winters traveling down south and summer on the Island. Last summer we set up at the Living Forest Campground in Nanaimo for the season, really nice, but did take the fifth wheel up to Strathcona Provincial Park for a week and then I have a camper van and made a nice trip to Quadra and Cortez Islands.

Vancouver Island is great if you have a smaller rig that can handle the logging roads, you can get into some stunning areas way off in the rain forest wilderness or over to the wild west coast.

Hi
We are in Radiun Hot Springs. Taking a 1 month trip to Living Forest campgrounds in Nanaimo. Trying to figure out ferry cost. Very confusing (government). We are 2 seniors and tow a 24RKSWE which is about 27' with a Ram quad cab. Anyone able to figure cost. Thanks for help.

I usually head to Golden Ears for a few days in the spring. I will quickly find out what I forgot to bring and be ready for trips further away.

I'd suggest that you go on their website and if you can navigate through that, you'll be able to find out what the cost will be. At certain times of the year and on certain sailings they do have a very good reduction in ferry fees. If possible, try going during those "bargain" days/times. Substantial savings can be had.

The current price for Horseshoe bay to Nanaimo is $56.45 for 20ft plus 6.50 for every ft after that.
So assuming that your truck is 21 ft and trailer 27 ft .
56.45 plus 28 x 6.50 = 182
182
238.45 x 12% sales tax = $267.06 each way.

I'm glad we aren't thinking of taking our 320SRX over cause it's 37 ft including the spare tire.

I think you forgot to include $16.50 per passenger unless they are seniors then it's 1/2 price if you travel Monday to Thursday on certain sailings. If that doesn't confuse you just go on their website. Pets are not allowed on any upper decks and cannot stay in the vehicle. Hey this is Canada if we can find a way to confuse we will do it. LOL!

Unless BC Ferries has recently changed their policy about pets, they cannot be taken above the car deck and are to remain in the vehicle. Drivers and car passengers are not allowed to stay in the vehicle on the car deck - they are supposed to proceed to the upper decks - leaving their pets inside the vehicle. Pets can be taken for a walk - on leash - on the car deck.

Festus2 You are right. I guess I was thinking about our Jack Russell who has separation anxiety. Has be to with his "pack". Couldn't leave him in the truck. So we didn't make the trip. Vancouver Island is a very nice place for a holiday but that ferry cost is big.

They now have on most ferries a pet center on the lower decks where you stay below with your pets and you can also stay with them in your vehicles.
For 30 yrs they've always had and changed rules. I've never followed them and I've never had a problem and I take the ferries alot every year.

Steve S: Good to know. I guess the mistake I made was to phone (Jan/17) and ask if we could stay below with our outfit because of the dog and we were told no passengers in the vehicles. Next time just do it and ask for forgiveness instead of permission.

I'm in the interior and don't really start until the May long weekend. But have nothing booked yet this year. Have a couple weekends at Bear Creek and then our 2 weeks in the US.

Let me know if you want to know about interior campsites.

I can't afford the ferry ride with a 34' trailer
