No Tail Lights

I have a 2004 3/4 ton silverado pulling a 27 Cougar. The tail lights and running lights are out. Any body know what fuse to check

Check the truck first. If all the tail lights and running lights on the trailer are out, it suggests that the single wire for that from the truck has a problem.

Check the truck fuses first, there may be a separate circuit for the tail lights to the trailer connector on the back of the truck. The owners manual for the truck can be helpful here.

If you don't find a bad fuse in the truck, time to check the connector. If you have a test light or volt meter, check Pin #4 on the TV's 7 pin connector near the hitch. It is Pin #4 in the lower left hand picture:

If you turn the lights on and Pin 4 has no voltage, the problem is definitely in the truck.

If Pin 4 has voltage, then there may be a problem in the pins when you plug in the pigtail from the trailer. Inspect and clean as needed. Make sure the pigtail is plugged in all the way and latched in place by the cover of the connector.

The fuses for the trailer lights are in the fuse panel under the hood.

I had a similar problem on my 2004 Silverado...

The fuse for the trailer tail lights is in the fuse panel under the hood on the drivers side.

I blew the fuse several times. I asked my dealer about it and they told me it was common for this fuse to blow because the newer RV's have more lights, hence more amp load on the fuse. They replace the 10 with a 15. I did this and no more problems!

I am not a big fan of oversizing fuses. If amperage draw is your problem I would replace the marker-light bulbs with LEDs. This will reduce the amp draw considerably and the LEDs last much longer. JM2˘, Hank

I am with you on this, Hank. Given the fact that truck manufacturers are constantly skimping on things like wire size to keep costs down, installing an larger fuse than spec is potentially dangerous. It may even void warranty.

The available LED replacements for the 194 bulb typically used in many marker lights work well and should cut the current draw more than enough to prevent the truck fuse from blowing.

Yes, I do agree with you on this, but manufactures are notorious for undersizing fuses as well as wires.

Wire size is the determining factor here. A check of the wiring from the fuse panel to the RV plug shows wire size adequate for a 15 amp or even larger fuse.

In that same fuse panel GM states that you may use a 30 amp or 40 amp fuse for the 12v live power to the RV for charging the RV batteries while underway.
