Hi from 65 North

Bought a 30 foot Ultra Light a couple of years ago in Dawson Creek, BC as prices up here were/are truly silly.

I tow this with a 2008 VW V8 FSI Touareg with air suspension with a gadzillion mods. The beast can handle up to 7,600 pounds. Awesome vehicle, yep do my own work (as I have a V6 FSI Touareg for the wife); no dealers here and don't trust they would know their way around them anyway

Anyway off fishing soon!

Hope to learn from you all and perhaps contribute. Stay warm

Welcome, nice rigs!

I spent a few field seasons doing forestry out of Dawson, now I've got family just across the line up in Fairview. Always try to get up there in the summer when the canola is out

Towing with a Touareg Question

I know this is an old thread, I'm hoping you're still monitoring it or someone else with a Touareg will be able to reply.
I have a 2016 Touareg and will be towing a Keystone Hideout 176BH (a little over 4000 lbs loaded). I'm not concerned about the T'regs ability to tow the weight my question is more about using a WDH hitch.
I've seen arguments on both sides about whether or not a WDH is a good idea on a Touareg.
From the photo, it looks like you're camper is a lot larger than mine, do you use a WDH when towing?

Check the Toureg owners manual on trailer towing.
Personally I would not simply due to the weight/length differences of the small SUV with a 21.5' long 4500lb trailer.

I agree with Danny's suggestion. The OP has not been active for a few years but if you send him a PM he may be notified by email and reply to you. Stay well and travel safely, Hank

I believe the owner's manual will tell you that you cannot use a weight distribution hitch. That vehicle with that size trailer should have one. That's why they aren't really used to tow RVs. Yes, it can tow 7k - 7500 lbs. (pull) it just isn't equipped suspension or frame wise to safely carry it. The unibody construction just isn't meant for that kind of stress.

Saw this suv pulling a passport yesterday on the Baltimore beltway..it looked overloaded..I was gonna get a better pic but they were going 50 miles an hour while the rest of traffic was at 62-65
At least they were driving slow

The armada on paper has better towing specs then the Touareg I’m sure but this armada was really sagging in the back…wouldn’t want to be in this rig if it started swaying

SUVs make great peoplt hualers. They do not make even decent hard sided camper hualers. Short wheelbase, unibody frame have too much fles and insufficiant mass and suspensions engineered for ride quality are not ideal for hualing a box with a high center of gravity and a lot of wind resistance. Don't get lured in by the horsepower or "tow ratings".

There's a distinct difference between pulling a load and carrying and controlling a load. If you want a hands on go to Home Depot or similar store and visit the garden dept. Get a flat cart or wagon and load about 200 lbs of anything in it. Chances are tou can pull it and manuver it (steer and stop) without it feeling out of control. Now take that same load and place it in a wheelbarrow. Now you must carry a great deal of that load to move it. Manuvering feels difficult to control. The higher the center of gravity the more pronounced the control ability.

That's a great analogy for "towing" as compared to "carrying"!

I've been towing my camper for 9 years with my 2008 V8 with air suspension Touareg. I do use a WDH and I don't have any issues. YMMV

Does your owner's manual recommend a wdh with your vehicle?

No it doesn't but air suspension does nothing for the fulcrum position. Air suspension raises the vehicle equally (you can't just raise the front or back). The WDH allows me to ensure all four wheels are weight bearing.

At now close to 91k miles on my 2008 Touareg, I've had no issues with it and do my own maintenance on my stable (bobcat, Macan, 992 and Treg) as I'm 350 miles from a dealer.
