Hope they were ok. With the wind we've had here in NE, I don't think I'd even attempt travel with our fifth wheel. Add the ice and it doesn't matter the speed it would be hard to control. My ~200mi round trip today on I-80 in my wife's car was a wrestling match keeping it on the road.
Did see a few campers on the road but not as many as usual.

As I recall he said no injuries. Goes to show you how these things can come apart very easily.

Thanks for sharing Chuck. I've seen several RV "accidents" and I will say none, repeat none, hold together worth a flip. They will disintegrate...to what degree and injury to others only depends on the circumstances. Word to the wise to all; water off a duck's back to some. JMO

We were coming home one Thanksgiving, from the BIL in Memphis, on I40 and traffic was all balled up... when we finally got to the "problem area" there was an SUV, on its side, in the median, with what was left of a trailer frame still connected, the roadway, shoulders and median were covered with what used to be the RV & contents , nothing really big or identifiable, just a lot of stuff.
It was icy out, who knows what happened, but it was bad.
Be careful out there.

A very expensive "single use" tool. From the looks of the damage, or should I say total destruction, I think it's safe to say that "speed to great for conditions" was a factor.

25 years ago we turned a HiLo into a flatbed in Wyoming on I-25 north of Chugwater. We were pulling out of the Chugwater rest stop and had just accelerated down the on-ramp when two wags of the trailer tail (pulling the trailer brakes on manually had no effect on stopping the sway) and we jack-knifed. The TV nosed down into the center median, reversed directions and rolled onto the passenger side pointing back the way we had come. The HiLo (frame and axle) was still connected to the hitch, but we closed down both lanes in both directions while they scraped everything up, piled it on the no-longer-Hi-only-Lo flatbed and strapped it all down and hauled it all to Wheatland.
The Trooper investigating the accident later told us that it was a microburst through the cut-bank that hit us. No ticket issued.

I saw the remaining single axle in the picture.
I think it started life as a double axle but lost the rear axle in the roll over.

If you look at the second photo, the "upside down trailer sidewall" only has a single cutout for the wheelwell. Then looking at the "upside down chassis" there's only one set of spring hangers and the rear entry steps are immediately to the left (behind) the axle that's still on the trailer, so there's not room for another axle aft of what's shown in the photo and there's no equalizer or spring hangers forward (right) of the axle.
It's not a dual axle trailer.
