Best not necessarily the quickest route

Hey folks, a little over a year ago we made the trip from Harrisburg PA. to Orlando FL. I'm pretty sure I went 81/64/95. Is that still my best bet or would 81/77/26/95? Thanks in advance.

I can't really help you, but this June I will be coming up 81 with my TT and would love to hear about your experiences on that road. I made that trip all the way up 81 from Tennessee many times by car and I am curious what a pain it is with the many trucks. And if you have any recommendations.

Last year we came from Knoxville TN up I-81 through VA and it just plain sucked.
Way, way too many trucks and very small shoulders. The road is torn up and rough.
I do not like pulling at much more than 65 MPH and this speed just upset semi's all the time.
That being said, we stayed at "Hungry Mother" state part and it's a joy.

If you are not in a hurry, look at Rt 15. I have little experience on it going south. I went north into western NY.

It is a surface street and avoids a lot of highway bother... and tolls.

I've travelled 15 quite a bit over the years from NY to Harrisburg and back. A few time have been as far south as Virginia. None of these trips were with trailer though. There are quite a bit of hills from what I remember, but like major bum said, the roads are fairly smooth. Not a lot of tractor trailers, but not zero either.

Route 15 takes you through Baltimore and DC and stuff, that's what I'm looking to avoid again.

Negative. Rt 15 does intersect with I-270. However, it does not merge with I-270 towards DC and Baltimore. It splits off and goes away from them into little towns like Leesburg and Haymarket. info from Google.com/maps

No complaints about avoiding Baltimore and DC.

Last fall we went from Columbia SC to Henniker NH using I-77, I-81, I-84, I-91 and Rt's 202 & 9 and return. This was the first time I pulled the 5er for more than a couple hundred miles. First off I traveled Monday through Thursday, I had no problems, yes there are a lot of trucks on 81 but that has been the case since the first time I traveled it in the mid 70's. I travel at 65mph and did not have any pressure from trucks, however I can't say the same for cars. The worst parts of the trip were Charlotte NC and Hartford CT. This year we are doing the same trip and also taking in Maine pretty much using the same route except we will be staying at the Greenville Farm Family CG in VA then Rt 15 to Harrisburg PA then back to I-81. My biggest problem is finding gas stations to accommodate my 5er. Which ever way you choose have a GREAT trip.

If you're only looking to avoid the major DC metro area why not take 15 South to 17 South to I-95S? Waiting until south of Fredericksburg VA to join up to 95 eliminates most of the traffic hassles and you can take 295 around Richmond to further reduce risk. At least I95 is pretty flat; the interstates to the west have a lot more hills.

I've only driven Rte 15 between I64 and Culpeper (where 15/17 splits) but that portion was a relative joy to tow on. Beats the heck out of Afton Mountain on I64.
