Mattress sizes?

We purchased a new camper with a "Queen Mattress" which is definitely like sleeping on the ground. What i was wondering is a camper mattress the same dimensions as a regular bedroom mattress?

Some are, some aren't. That said, much of the RV industry uses "queen size" to denote two basic sizes. "Standard queen" means a mattress that measures 60x80 and is typically the same size as a "home queen size mattress. However, there is also an "RV queen" which is about 6" shorter. Typically, the RV queen measures 60x74, 60x75 or 60x76.

Some RV mattresses have "rounded corners" to help manage traffic at the foot of the bed, most don't.

I'd urge you to measure your mattress rather than use measurements provided on any forum. That way you'll know for sure what size you have and can purchase a replacement that you know will fit the platform in your specific trailer.

Thanks!! I definitely dont mind having a longer mattress by a couple of inches since I'm 6'5 but i will measure the width so that i can make sure the fit is right.

As John noted, an RV queen can be any length and darn near impossible to find fitted sheets. If it's at all possible and can be made to fit, a 'standard' queen will be best plus open up virtually hundreds of possibilities for replacement. Our 5er has a standard queen size - and the original Keystone supplied mattress was swapped out for an almost new Simmons Beautirest from our trade before we even hauled the trailer out of the dealer's lot. Others use Sleep Number or Memory Foam.

I see you are from my hometown of Niles.

Not sure what your layout is, but I know our wardrobe slide would prohibit using a longer mattress due to the fact that when closed, it is tight to the bed.

Its a rear dinnette so the mattress is to the right when you enter the door laying sideways to the length of the TT

Mattress size

Have had our 28RLS for several months. Decided we needed a better mattress. Measured the platform and came up with 65w x74l. This trailer is sold as a King Bed. Anyone understand Keystone's rational for this and what size do I replace it with.

I don't think it's just a Keystone thing. The whole RV industry is beset with odd ball mattress sizes. My Cougar came with a Short Queen which is 60" x 74". My old Sunline had the same size. I am 6'2" and those mattresses are no fun at all. I was able to extend the platform for the bed in the Cougar by 6" and we now have a standard Queen with a built-in pillow top which is much more comfortable for both of us.

I looked for RV mattress size charts and regular mattress size charts on the net, and none of them have a 65" wide size. An RV King is 72" x 75". A true King is supposed to be 76" by 80". Your 65" x 74" is possibly a custom mattress.

What I would do is measure the platform that the mattress sits on. That may give you a better idea of what size mattress you could purchase.

Like I mentioned earlier, I was able to extend the platform to support a standard Queen. The bed is in a slide-out and when retracted, there was about 6-8" of open space between the foot of the RV Queen and the cabinet on the opposite wall. Some Gorilla Glue, a few screws, some brackets and a piece of plywood later, we tossed the flimsy mattress that Keystone supplied and replaced it with a standard Queen that is much better for both of us. The mattress just barely kisses the cabinet when the slide is retracted.

Our rig came with an RV King, 72 X 80, with 12" radius corners at the foot end. We suffered with it, ended up putting a padded mattress cover on it. We finally found a custom mattress company that made us a flippable latex foam mattress with the radius corners that fits perfectly. Just start looking for a custom mattress maker to make one.

Our 5er came new to us with a standard queen 60" X 80" even thought the base was about 58" X 74", so tucking in sheets and blankets was difficult, I extended the upper part and made the base to 78" so sheets were easier to tuck in.
The mattress it came with sucked! We replaced it with a very nice full queen from a household mattress store.

Our Impact 303 came with a full size queen mattress and after one night of sleeping on it, my wife decided that it had to go. I was "OK" with it, but we are a bit spoiled I guess from having a sleep number bed in the house. So, back around Memorial day, the Sleep number store had a pretty good sale on sleep number beds and what we ended up doing is taking the 20+ year old sleep number bed from the house and putting it in the Toy Hauler, and buying a new one for the house. Now we sleep in comfort whether we are camping or at home and it's very nice to have the same exact feel of the mattress in either place. No modifications had to be made to the T.H. as it was a full queen to start with.

Mattress size

Guess I'll take some measurements, see if I make some adjustments and go the custom route. I'm just amazed Keystone can get away with calling this a King

Keystone isn't "getting away" with anything. EVERY RV manufacturer, for as long as I can remember, has used their own size arrangement for RV beds. I had a "queen size bed" in a 1972 Jayco that measured 55x90 and was actually a "goucho" across the front of the trailer. The "full size bunk" that unfolded above it was 48x94 and the dinette that "sleeps two" was 48x72. In 1993 when we bought our "luxury Holiday Rambler" they were advertising "True Homesize Queen Mattress" that was 60x78. Our "King size master bed" in the Motorhome was 65x80 and the dinette in it was 48x74. The 2011 Springdale (our first Keystone trailer) had a "RV Queen Mattress" which measured 60x75 and this one, in the Cougar, measures 60x75, so if anything, at least Keystone has "standardized" the RV queen size mattress.

As for bunks in any trailer, regardless of brand, if you can find one that will accept a "twin size mattress" from a mattress store, you're fortunate. None that I've seen are "standard" and every "Double bunk" style has had at least one corner that's at a 45 degree angle to allow for bathroom/pantry access. None from any manufacturer I've seen are the standard sizes, some are 50x74, some are 55x80, others are 60x54 and some are 54x74: the "standard double bed measurement" for a "S&B mattress" but those have a rounded or cut off corner, so even they aren't "standard" when compared to a S&B mattress. So much for "bunks",,,

So, it's not "Keystone ought to..." as much as it is "The entire industry follows marketing practices that don't tell the whole story".......

Just my take on the "mattress size concept" (I don't think it's a controversy as much as a learning curve for the new RV owner)... Now, try to find sheets that fit any of them??? Likey, "ain't happening".....

I find SteveC7010's extension interesting my solution was a bit different. I just happened to have a piece of 1/2" waffer board sitting around, so I replaced the piece at the head of the bed, and added 4" to it and moved the lift up part back that far also, so now I have a 6" over hang instead of a 2" overhang.

Cryoman, I can't add anything to John's post that would change your feelings toward Keystone, but I can tell you that our latest search for a new RV covered every major manufacturer's top 5ver. EVERY one had mattresses made to fit their purpose.

We swapped our factory "mattress" for a sleepnumber RV queen and have enjoyed perfect sleep on the road ever since. The old mattress works great for a dog bed in the garage, and even that is pushing it.

Are all of your mattresses of a "normal" thickness? Ours is much thicker than usual, may have been put in by previous owner. It is quite comfortable, but short for a 6' person. Finding sheets that would stay on has been difficult, I think we are using queen or king sheets, mattress is less than queen width. I had to make a "deck" for my wife because she had a hard time getting in and out of such a high bed. It is 1/2" plywood on 2 2x10's on edge and is carpeted, gives her some shoe storage on her side of bedroom. We do sleep well, even though it is a lot different from our waterbed at home.

Went the 10"gel foam custom route. Now I'm sleeping soundly in the camper. Toes hang a little when I stretch out. Didn't have room for an extension in out TT. I do like the 28rls a lot. Now I love it. Amazing what a good nights sleep will do.
