Nothing wrong with towing a heavy trailer on bump stops, right?

This rig pulled up next to me at the Ludington State Park''s dump station over the weekend. I just about died when I saw the rear axle sitting on the bump stops. Then, 4 teenage kids appeared from the 2nd and third rows. Kayaks secured to the luggage rack and a loaded cargo space behind the 3rd row.

Dad filled his frwsh water tanks in complete denial of anything 'suspiciously' wrong. His TV was a previous generation Chevy Suburban tugging along a double slide 36ft Bullet Premier bunkhouse. I can only imagine how many specs he was over on.

I almost asked him how "great" the burb feels towing on the bump stops. At least I saw a WDH so I know he was doing something right.

Wow, if they put "Bags" under that TV no one would have noticed, and not been "Bullied" for the next week on this forum. These posts are not helpful. Sad.

I do agree that it's sad but not for the same reasons. We see/hear this a lot when we upgrade the trailer because we believe our current TV will do. I know I did this. Once. And never again.

What's sad is that we can convince ourselves that this is ok and all is well even when it isn't. We convince ourselves that the ride is great, the experience is great and the safety is great. Pride is different than stupidity and much more dsngerous.

The first thing I noticed was the obvious, overloaded. The second thing I noticed was the bars on the WDH, he obviously just hooked them up for the sake of hooking them up. I've never seen a properly set up hitch with bars that are not at least parallel, sometimes a little beyond parallel. There's no way the height difference before and after connecting the bars has even changed, as I said, connected for the sake of connecting.

I would have noticed, bags or no bags... This kind of thing is obvious to those of us who have been around the block more than once...

There are those on here who would tow a Bullet with a Freightliner and those who would tow a Freightliner with a Toyota. I for one enjoy the banter that goes along with these posts. And I also believe there is plenty to learn from them all. I love the pictures of the fools out there and the posts from those who support them.

If this was me that saw this I would've have taken a pic, posted it and made a mockery of him as he drove of and was the next statistic on the hwy way.
A wife, kids and one really dangerous setup like that I would've simply asked him if he could pull over for 1/2 hr so I could point some important issues out to him about his setup. You'd be amazed at how many people have been given the wrong advice from a dealer and will actually listen especially when you show them your rig that's done properly. They'll see the visual difference right away and start asking questions.
I'm sorry guys but I find no humor in this when it comes to human safety.

I don't find humor in it either, and yes we try to educate ANY body that pulls into our service center with an improper set up. Some listen and some scoff, but in the end we can say we tried.

Obviously the WDH is not big enough or is not setup correctly.

Whether or not the TV is adequate, a properly setup WDH will be able to level-out the TV (actually, a properly sized WDH can bring the rear end up higher than it should if tightened up enough).

If it is riding on the bumpers, it is not setup correctly.

I've always wondered as being a tech and a dealership can't you legally hold them until they have their rig fixed?

NO !!!!!!! That's Kidnapping and will get you (and the dealership) in serious trouble. Even though what they are doing might be unsafe, wrong and pose a threat to everyone in the vehicle and on the road around the vehicle, trying to become a "nanny state enforcer" and hold someone or their equipment "until they comply" is a great way to wind up on the wrong side of justice.

No. A business has no legal authority to confiscate/hold/detain other people's property.

That is why disassembling things (like brakes) in order to inspect them can be dicey. If the customer doesn't want you to fix them, what do you do, put it back together or leave it in pieces?

Although a customer insists on you putting it back together as it was, you have now worked on it and have liability. Or you refuse to put it back together without fixing it, which has problems of its own.

Some places make you sign paperwork prior to inspecting, however some don't. Hopefully the signed paperwork has verbiage that covers this situation.

Lots of liability working on people's vehicles. Something a lot of shops don't think about.

IIRC that's what got Sears in trouble years ago. Customer would roll into auto center and service advisor would claim brake pads too thin, against the law to let them leave. And then gouge the customer.
