I'd still guess that nothing shady or underhanded occurred. I'd almost bet that the trailer was "scheduled for sale" earlier, the PDI was done, trailer filled with water to deliver to the new buyer and the deal fell through, so they drained the tanks, but not the water heater and the trailer was towed back to the display line where it sat until the OP bought it, all that time with water in the water heater.....

John, your explanation makes sense. We dump the tanks but we don’t do anything with the WH. We don’t winterize so it’s not thought of.

I don't think cold water left in a tank will eat an anode to the degree the one picture showed. I believe heat is the catalyst that causes the ion exchange that results in the rod getting eaten and not the tank. I would consider draining and doing some inspection of the tank using either a camera (not sure what they are called but mechanics use them for looking down spark plug wells and such) or a small mirror and flashlight. I have a small inspection mirror and flashlight and looked at my tank a bit as I have a very old camper and I wasn't confident of the tank.

It’s called a “bore scope” (straight tube) or an inspection camera. I have an inspection camera with a flexible neck.

As a motorcycle mechanic, I don't have one (specialize in carburetors). I don't have a lot of memory either as I should have known the name... thanks!

In the 70’s I worked as an aircraft painter and watched the mechanics bring out this thin tube with a mirror (I think) to look into the turbines. I bought my inspection camera years ago to look into automotive engine cylinders via spark plug hole. It will record video, take pictures and zoom in color. I have brought it to the shop a few times to look in places you can’t see. WON’T use it to look into a black tank.
