Pin box bolts loosened

For those that tow fifth wheels, here are a couple pictures of my hitch on my Mountana Mountaineer 37.5 ft. trailer. It has the Moreryde (sp?) hitch. Yesterday we returned to Snohomish, Washington from a three week trip during which we hitched and un-hitched four times. On the way home I had a couple incidences that are worth mentioning. The first I want to mention and warn everyone traveling I-90 westbound mile 32 through North Bend, WA. Stay out of the far right lane, regardless of what you are towing. There are a series of dips close together that I have hit numerous times in the past and I should have remembered but I didn't. They put my truck and trailer in a violent up and down occillation. Then while exiting I-405 a bit later I had an idiot flatbed tow truck operator pull out from the shoulder as I was traveling at least 50mph. I had to slam on the brakes and lock up the trailer brakes. Either of these incidenses may have caused the loosening of my hitch bolts but I wanted everyone to know what can happen. I will be checking the torque on a regular basis from now on. The first picture is the inside of the pin box and the other is the bolts on the outside.

Something to check, as these trailers are rolling earthquakes.

Related...for the Andersen hitch folks, check the kingpin adapter Allens occasionally as they tend to loosen a bit. 40# of torque.

1/2 x 13------------65 ft lbs--------80 ft lbs

5/8 x 11------------135 ft lbs-------170 ft lbs

3/4 x 10------------220 ft lbs-------280 ft lbs

Just changed out my pin box to a rota flex. Guess I'll get the 3/4" drive torque wrench out and crank on them some more.

At work I use an impact gun that can produce 740 lb/ft of torque.

My Lippert box shows about a 1/32" shift. Not a big concern, but will retorque.

1/2------90#
5/8-----150#
3/4-----275#
All grade 5.

I found the same spec on the MORryde site. Now to find a torque wrench to rent that goes that high.

Autozone/ Advance Auto will rent you those for essentially free. You give them a deposit and they give it all back to you when you return it.

If you show some slippage, you might consider some new fasteners as the photos show they are Grade 5. Grade 8 will move you into a higher torque number and with that higher number you will have a higher clamping pressure. Also, if they have slipped, you may want to look at the condition if you reuse those bolts as they are in a shear assembly mode and may be strength compromised if any damage shows.

I was thinking the same thing this morning. Since I'm sick in bed with a mega-cold I haven't had a chance to remove and inspect the bolts. I did look a little further in the Lippert site and found a maintenance manual buried in the bowls of the site. They recommend checking the pin box bolts every 1500-2000 miles (!) and torquing them to 95-110#. I assume that's a Grade 5 torque, as mine are Grade 5 bolts. That setting differs with Etrailer specs, though.

I would recommend that you use the torque specs listed for whatever pin box you have.
I intend to replace the bolts, I haven't inspected them yet but will make sure that I have the right bolts and torque.

Grade 5, 5/8" coarse and 95-110# torque, as mentioned.

Well, my Grade 5, 5/8 bolts and nuts were all tight according to Lippert specs.

One more thing to add to my torque list. Really glad you posted this issue.
