Hot Water bypass

Ok, I have the 2016 Cougar 327RES and I can't find the hot water Bypass. Any ideas? I would think that it's right under my stove but it doesn't appear to be there.

If it's like mine, it's on the back of the hot water heater. If it has one.

Locate the water heater on the outside, then go inside and look for a access panel. They will usually be behind that panel. You may have to remove some screws to remove the panel. The by pass will be on the back side of the water heater.

That's the problem. Directly behind the water heater is the refrigerator and some cabinets. I don't see any access panels or screws. The kitchen slide out is next to it and I opened every drawer there too with no results. I doubt that the bypass would be located in a slide.

mets721, Howdy;

Sometimes you can't see what you need to just by pulling out drawers
as there may be a verticle panel between the drawers and the HWH.
Start by pulling the panel below the fridge. have a good look-see, if it's
not there keep pulling panels until you find it.

If it's anything like the 2012 327res you need to remove the back paneling in the storage compartment and it is right on the back of the water heater.

From looking at the floor plan and a picture, the water heater is under the bathroom. From the back of the trailer you can see the fridge and to the left of that is the heater and the left of the heater is the water heater. The basement door is under the bed slide so as listed above, there is a panel there.

Looks like your right. I looked at pictures of a 2016 327res on line and the water heater is located between the furnace and the storage compartment and is down low so the most likely access is through the storage compartment.

Found it

Thanks for the help. I located it behind a panel in the storage area. Little bit strange to me that there appears to only be one valve to open or close. My past unit had three to operate. I guess this is normal for keystone or 5th wheels???

Strange location to have to access the the valve in the storage area, they sure don't make it easy or convenient for that model.

Mine is simple to access via panel beside the sink, two screws and I'm there.

My bypass only has one valve as well. I think they used the KISS methodology there.

One cutoff valve is used in the newer configurations along with a one way valve. The one way is on the output of the water heater and looks like a standard pipe nipple. The one way is prone to failure. I removed the innards of mine and installed a by-pass using the old method.

My previous trailer, the hot water tank was in the storage area as well. My Premier has the single knob bypass, works fine so far.

I have the Cougar 288RLS and just discovered that my water heater is also behind a panel in the storage compartment <ugh!!>. Could they have made it any harder to get to?!?! Looks like I may have to remove two panels to get to it. I'm hoping after I determine where exactly the hot water heater is I can cut a small hole in the one panel and simply reach in whenever I have to turn the bypass valve on or off. I'm hoping for the short term the valve is in the open position so that I don't have to worry about it for now, although I'm glad I discovered this now rather than after I left for a camping trip!!

Many owners have to remove one panel to access the HW heater but it seems unusual to have to remove two. The only time I have to remove the single panel is during the winterizing and de-winterizing processes. I am not one of those who drain and refill the HW tank after and/or before each trip. Been doing this since Day 1 without any issues.

Since I only remove and replace the single panel twice during the season, gaining access to the bypass valve is not a big problem for me but I can see in some cases for some people it might be.

I don't empty my hot water tank after every trip either. Only if it will be sitting for a real long time. The one panel I need to remove is sort of underneath the middle panel (the one edge rests underneath the second panel) and also has a bunch of electrical gadgets attached to it (cable connection, electrical connection & light) not to mention a lot of screws. Once I see what I'm dealing with I'm hoping to cut a hole big enough so that I can reach in easily and turn the valve on and off. I'd rather not have to go through removing and reattaching the panel each year to winterize the trailer and risk stripping the screws. I'm just annoyed that I now need to empty out the storage area to remove the panel(s) to see what I'm dealing with. But like I said, glad I discovered this now rather than at the campground!

If you do a forum search, there was a recent thread that shows an access port added to the wall to eliminate having to remove the entire panel.
BTW, NJDudette, Welcome from Central Cal - I was born and raised just a little way down 94 in Blairstown.

Nice to meet you jsmith948! Grew up in the Newton area and moved back there after some years away (living in Morris County). I love the country, but not the commute back down to Morris County during the week. I'll look for the thread you mentioned.

Yeah, that's crazy that the factory doesn't install these basement panels with at least an access hole already cut out. Even though you only have to access the water heater bypass valve twice a year, it is a major pain to have to remove that giant panel. I actually just completed installation of the deck plate access hatch on my 2015 28SGS today. here is a link to that thread: http://www.keystonerv.org/forums/sho...776#post204776
