Cushioned king pin box necessary now?

Bought a Chevy kodiak C4500 conversion with rear air ride and was told I have to upgrade to a cushioned fifth wheel king pin box otherwise the truck will beat the Fuzion to death.
Is there any truth to this?

Never heard of a 5er being beat to death by the TV but there are pin boxes available that cushion the front to back movement of your RV and provide some cushion at the connection, one being the Lippert Trail-air and another being the Lippert Flex-air with the latter helping both ride and bucking. There are also air ride hitches to, though they are a little pricey I believe.

Does the 5th wheel hitch on the Kodak pivot side to side? I’ve read reports of using class 8 tractors over stressing pin boxes/frames when on uneven ground though not recently. I don’t know if that would be a problem with a Kodak or not with a non pivot side to side hitch.

Front to back I wouldn’t think it would be a problem but I’ve been wrong before.

It's due to the much stiffer suspension on medium/heavy duty trucks. If it were me I'd take their advice, I've got the Trail Air TriGlide (no longer available, replaced with the FlexAire) on mine & what a huge difference over the non cushioned & I just have a dually pickup.

Would a mor/ryde pin box help much? I can get a smoking deal on one.

As previously mentioned, if you have a commercial hitch without side to side rocker function, you will need at minimum a rocker hitch in order not to stress the pin box and frame when going over uneven ground. You could add that and an air ride pin box or replace the hitch with an air ride hitch which will provide the necessary rocker function. I’ve been using the air safe hitch for 17 years now and its in its second truck.

Not familiar with it, but it would be better than a rigid hitch.

The Mor Ryde pin box shifts forward and backwards on pins. IIRC it moves about 3”. As stated above, it should be an improvement over a solid pin box.

It has a Reese R 20 with both rocker and pivot.

Without any vertical cushion on the mor ride wouldn't the trailer frame still absorb all the road shock though?

Road shock will be transferred through a rigid ( solid) pin box. Here is the link, I don’t have one, so I can’t say how the ride is.

Most of it would still be even with the Mor-Ryde, its more for front to back
movement. I would get one like one of the two I list.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lippert-RV-...NZOydZ&vxp=mtr

Or

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lippert-Com...JXYGl1&vxp=mtr

The last one would be the one I'd consider, just have to make sure you get the right model for your RV as they have different configurations and weight ratings for the same pin box.

Wasn’t the Kodak rated the same as a F450 or 550? If so, I would think it would be equal. I’ve not seen 450s with air although I’ve seen 350s with cushioned pin boxes. Must not be a problem just operator preference?
