Last week ends screw up

Out camping last week end for mothers day and our site got flooded so we where able to move to another site.I backed up to 5er and heard 5th wheel click locked so dumb me didn't get out to check and double check jaws to make sure they where locked (since I was only going just over there ) back out of site and go to pull out of site and this is what you get $6100 damage. At least none got hurt but my pride because everyone in the campground had to come out to see what made that loud sound

That sucks, but glad everyone is OK! Do they actually try to reskin that bed or do you get a whole new bed?

Wink

Looks like the inside of your bed needed to be repainted anyway.

YIKES !! A "not so gentle reminder" that it doesn't always happen to the other guy

What kind of hitch was it? and what happened, a "high hitch" or ???

Always nice to have somebody that kicks you when you are already down.

Sorry about what happened.

Crash, kudos to you first off for admitting all this happened. Most of us would have swept it under the rug and hoped that no one on the forum ever heard about our experience. Next, thanks for telling the little tale because it serves to reaffirm what all of us already know: Double check, including that little tug with the trailer brakes ON, every single time.

Costs do add up quickly. Last fall driver side of my truck bed was damaged when in rolled onto the side. Driver side outer skin was only damage to the bed and they reskinned it at nearly 1,000 just for the part, just that one side. And had to remove the bed to do it. I think labor hours on my bed were near 8. I think on yours you may just get a new bed.

I though when I first started with my 5er I would never forget to lower my tailgate nor drop my 5er on the bed rails because I paid to much attention to do something that stupid. Well.....I get dent in top of tailgate from forgetting to lower it now all I have left is dropping the 5er I've competed the full cycle.

Thanks for being man enough to fess up and post pics. Hopefully it will help others to be a little more aware of test pulling before leaving the site. Not the first time that's happened.

Sorry for the damage but thanks for giving all a reminder that it can happen to any of us when we "forget" to dot the I's and cross the T's.....and anymore, in my case, it is becoming a constant battle to remember the I's and T's.. Glad no one was hurt.

Thanks for the info. for me, it seems like every time I hitch, I have that "little nagging" feeling in the back of my head wondering if I've "high hitched" or if the hitch will "open on its own".... Even when I get out and check, do a "pull test" and then check again, for the first several miles, it's "when will it happen"....

I've heard, many times, that there are two kinds of fifth wheel owners, those who have dropped the trailer on their bed and those who will, in the future, drop the trailer on their bed. For me, neither group is one I want to join.

Hopefully, this will all be behind you soon.....

Been there; done that. A Reese 16 K with a bad weld that allowed the jaws to open after I had pull tested. Dropped the trailer on the bed; ruined the bed and tailgate. Turned it all over to my insurance company. They paid for everything less my deductible, then went after Reese; got their money and my deductible back. Since then, I have a Blue Ox with a Curt Q20 in the new truck. Much better system than Reese IMO. When I hitch, I lower the trailer to where the hitch pin just touches the Blue Ox. Slips right into the hitch without a doubt.

We see this all the time at the dealership. Good luck with the repairs.

Last time I picked up from the dealer, they removed my capture plate, broke a bolt doing it, and put the whole assembly in the cargo area. I didn't notice, hooked up, started to drive off and the auto-slider rotated 180 degrees, slamming the back stop at the end of the slide.

No damage to the truck, as it stayed on the slider. Since then, I've been super paranoid about hooking up. I keep the legs down, lock the trailer brakes and give it a tug before going anywhere... Certainly a visual inspection of jaw lock is a good idea.
