We bought a King dish and just take one of our receiver's from the house. Super easy.

HR21 is a high def reciever. You can use a portable dish, but you will only get standard def channels. To get HD on Directv you have to use the roof mounted “Travler”. We have direct at home with a standard def reciever in the bedroom. Take that one with us along with a “carry out” dish.

I might be wrong but;

For $119.00 you can get a portable Directv Slimline antenna system for HD reception. We have one and after you find a clear shot to the satellite it works great. Do a direct hook-up first before trying the trailer wiring.

Very interesting. I figured directv would come up with something more affordable to combat the dish portable HD set up.

They can't because of the sats they use.

Direct TV has put most of their HD-exclusive channels on a Ka band satellite and no dome can receive that signal.
Dish is the best by far for portable sats. We had DTV and dumped them for Dish to be able to have HD and a portable. Dish's pay as you go is easy. Setting up the dish is easy. Having to remove my HDR from home every time we go camping would be a PITA.

Interesting! We switched to Dish several years ago when DTV dropped some channels we like, now I have another reason to be glad we switched; just got a portable system for the RV, works great for HD and super easy to set up (once I fixed Keystones "satellite prep" wiring )! There's no way I wanted to fight with trying to align a fixed dish on a tripod every time we set up camp.

You can get a directv antenna to receive HD in your RV (not a dome). I think ours is from Winegard and we just take a couple of receivers with us when we travel. Same account we use at home and the antenna searchers for the satellites with the press of a button in our kitchen.

Yup, its the Winegard Trav’ler previously mentioned by Chuckster and it is still the only game I’m aware of for DirecTV HD with automatic setup and its roof mount only not portable(best but not least expensive). You can go portable HD with manual setup(least expensive but not necessarily best). Also, the Winegard solution comes with a three port SWM for multiple receiver hookup inlcuding the OP’s receiver model as we started with that one.

We also have Direct, we requested another receiver that they let us turn on during the summer months for an additional $6 month. We used it when we had our other RV at a campground so we didn't have to keep unhooking the one at the house.

Had the HD receiver so initially went with HD antenna. Then got a great deal on an auto dome. Mounted it on the roof running the cables down through the refrig area. We now only get regular and even with a 49 inch TV it is good enough, records 2 channels while you watch recorded stuff like the old systems used to and its fully automatic. Turn it on in the cable compartment and it finds the sats etc.

Also wired it so a quick change of connection in that area can use cable or our RV antenna if need be.

The real problem is with how you set up your traveling account with DTV. We go the same place every year so we just do a change of address. MN locals in Summer and Phoenix locals in Winter. If you set it up for travel you have to chose either NY or LA a your local channels. Benefit of that is using you DTV all fo the time AFTER you to the FCC paperwork etc as opposed to ours which can only use close to either of our address choices.

On the topic. How long does it take you to setup (tune) your slimline?

I have the King Quest, but only get SD channels. I have heard that Directv will only broadcast in HD next April. The portable dome may not work after that.

It's not satellite, but it's HD & FREE, use your antenna! Typically we get 50-60 channels most every place we've been. Or use the park cable, it's also FREE & some have HD.
From our experience, with satellite you PAY for more channels of nothing to watch. At least with our antenna or park cable when there's nothing but crap on I'm not out anything.
I guess we are the odd balls though, we don't watch sports, we don't watch any of the ridiculous reality programs, as long as there's a channel we can get an old western movie, we're good.

My only additional cost was the King Quest and H24 box. My monthly costs are the same. At the time, I switched from cable to Directv. I use the H24 box in a room at home. I just take it and change the setup when on the road. I thought about Dish, but in the end I focused on the home experience. Dish is better for the road, but Directv seems like a better home setup.

In my case, the DW put pressure on me. She wanted to be able to watch football (college) during the fall.

All you need is a portable dish and your hr21 or higher receiver from home. I take mine every time. Full hd and DVr. Regularly I get my signal in under 2 minutes 90% or better. Buy this. Off amazon. $120-134$. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0051...-IL&ref=plSrch

By the way two great apps for locating the satellites on your iPhone is sattoolzdirectv and dish align. Pick the directv 101.0 West sattelite to align off. With a little practice In your driveway where you can see the signal strength on your tv with the reeciever set on show signal strength and where you can also hear the ping you will be on it in no time. Directv has a site where you put in the zip code you are at for general alignment. Or you can enter the zip on your receiver. Always set the azimuth in the dish first. It’s three set screws and you lock in the tilt. Then go to the up and down. It’s generally 35 degreees in the north states and 40 + in the southern states. There is a measurement dial right in the dish where you set the screws. Then set your compass east west direction. Just move it around and watch your tv. Once you get any kind of signal you can fine tune the up and down and east and west to get a better signal. . Tighten them down. Easy! Doesn’t take a rocket scientist. Also another good tip is look for other rVs where they are pointed for general direction before you start. Remember. Azimuth on the dish first. Then up and down. Then east and west.
