When we went a couple years ago, we stayed at Pohick bay in virgina. Its about 24 miles (37 min according to google) south of DC. Very nice, very clean campground. Found the sites were very spacious. Be careful of the tile floor in the bathroom as it can be slippery (don't ask how I know lol).

We went for 4th of july, toured the white house, stayed a night in DC, all that kinda stuff. We really like the historic stuff in DC and the town itself, lots of interesting things to see/do. But being a little further away it still felt like we were "camping".

We've stayed at Cherry Hill twice, good experiences both times. Friendly staff, very helpful if you're there to tour the area. Also 1 exit away from the the Greenbelt metro station which puts you about 30 minutes away from the center of DC. Some sites are nicer than others so check the map, the staff was very helpful (honest) about which sites would work for us.

We stayed at Greenville Farms Family Campground in the Haymarket, VA area last year, about 24 miles from the Vienna/Fairfax Metro station. It was reasonably priced for the area, but I would not recommend it due to its site configuration: difficult to get in and out of the sites - too many trees in the way (beautiful, but stressful maneuvering). When we were there there were lots of mud traps due to inclement weather and site selection was limited. The bathrooms also left something to be desired. No problems with staff; they were friendly and helpful - it is principally the sites.

My DW and I have stayed at Cherry Hill a couple times in the past. Once with children and once without. The kids had a great time, always something for them to do. Be choosy if you can when picking a site as some of them can be very close, our first visit our awning was almost touching the camper next to us. The second visit we had a wonderful pull-thru.

The clincher for us were the busses and shuttles that went directly to the Metro station. We really never needed to even start the truck once we got to the campground. We took the shuttles everyday to the station and spent the days in DC.
