A few years ago we stayed at the KOA in Bernillio north of Albuquerque, drove to a local mall parking lot where we caught a shuttle bus to the balloon park, dropped off at the front gate , no traffic or parking to deal with & the KOA had a free pancake breakfast every day. If going again would do the very same.

We stayed at the other KOA slightly east on I-40 - about a 20 min drive to the Balloon Park. Nice campground, but, the KOA in Bernillo-north on I-25, is way closer. You have to be there for one of the "mass assentions" and the "dawn patrol"- the balloons light up like Chinese lanterns when they hit the burners. Spectators are allowed on the field to mingle with the Balloonists - great folks who were always willing to answer our dumb questions - the photo ops are endless. It was quite chilly in the morning until the sun came up - so dress warm. Glad we went - it was really spectacular.

We've been to the "Balloons" several times. Best place to stay, if you can dry camp, is at the festival RV parking. It's just across the road from the balloon field and they run shuttle busses every 15 min. or so both directions. http://www.balloonfiesta.com/guest-guide/rv-information
If the wind is just right we've seen them fly right over the RV area!
We wouldn't park anywhere else...

Edit: Because you're just across the street, Go see everything!! Mass ascension every morning. Balloon Glow at night the museum, Everything.

We stayed at the casino just west of Albuquerque forget the name. Great place. They provided a hamburger and hotdog dinner one evening and also inflated a balloon in the park. Agree dress warm. 41 degrees the morning we were there.

Thanks everyone..we went to 2018 Balloon Fiesta & the Museum..one of best experiences EVER..we dry camped at South Field. Great neighbors, shuttle was simple. Dumping, water are available for a fee..come right to your campsite. There was also an RV repair outfit set up on site. Was a bit close to each other, but that was fine! If interested in hookups, need to reserve in January we heard.Click image for larger version

Glad you had a Good Time. We sure did when we went!
This year we attended the Reno Balloon Festival and the following weekend the Reno Air Races. Maybe your next balloon adventure in 2019 will be in Nevada??

Thanks, we've had great experiences at the Albuquerque event but decided to change it up this year and try the Reno event. Plus was able to work in the Air Races (bucket list item for me) the following week. Well worth the trip!

Pretty cool. There is a similar show in Dansville, NY that occurs every Labor Day Weekend. All the local campgrounds around the area get booked pretty early (especially Letchworth), but we'll have to go check it out at some point in the future.
