Looks like something that my father in law would have made. Yep, exactly like that.

Don't like that crack I see in the 2x2, looks to be all the way through! I would drip a lil' Elmer's Glue in there and then a Zip-tie.... should be good to go!

As long as he has his air bags pumped up he should be good to go!

Depends on whether its oak or pine! Way different ratings from one to the other!

The oak is for the 2 5/16" ball, that's the 2" in the pine.

That looks like the "upgraded pressurized treated" pine model. If so, then it is rated higher than the "untreated pine model" so it will carry more weight, but not as much as the oak model.
The user may find it suitable for towing within 50 miles of home, at speeds less than 65MPH, with the fresh water tank empty. Depending on whether he tows with an SUV or a half ton (no 3/4 ton owner should use the pine model), he should be OK with local towing. The SUV model doesn't have sway control capability, so keep that in mind when approaching the 50 mile limit from home base !!!!!

Ah, but you didn't see the available river birch model with built in sway control!

I believe these are issued with the standard Airstream RV's because of the ease of towing.

The crack is probably from drilling too small a hole for the size tap he needed to use for threading it.

There is no grease on that ball, he is going to cause premature wearing on his rig. Need to lube that ball for proper wear.

If it's PRESSURE TREATED, does that make a difference?
I still "WOOD" have serious reservations, without the afore mentioned zip ties!

If you wrap the pine in silver duct tape it will have a metal look and at least quadruple the load capacity. Sway control on this modification is no longer necessary.
And you just know someone somewhere is reading this thinking, I've got pine and duct tape!

Gorilla tape may even increase the capacity

Imagine the strength it would have if you painted it with Gorilla glue, then covered it with Gorilla tape !!! It would almost be a "living thing" capable of repairing its own cracks (if they were brave enough to even happen).....

I’d drill some holes in it if you’re looking for a truly light-weight hitch.
