crack at the receiver opening

Is this an issue? Just noticed after putting it on a few months ago. Working with Curt to replace after etrailer ditched me. Have a short ( hour) trip planned for this weekend so not sure I should hook up. Thoughts?Click image for larger version

Is that just the opening cover? Or does it go all the way into the receiver?

Is it just surface rust or is the split completely through the collar? May want to take a wire brush to it to see how deep it goes. I would be very cautious with a crack in the receiver tube. Curt Mfg should be able to help you if it really is only several months old. They sell plenty of them.

It's split at one corner and starting at another. Hopefully I get good news tomorrow. Guy I was talking with said in 30 years, he's never seen this. I'm not sure I believe that

Matt, any particular reason you would not believe that the guy had never seen this before? There are literally thousands of years of towing experience on this forum and I'm betting not a single soul has seen this before. I have seen receivers (our own) that had so much rust and crud inside that the hitch had to have a few quick strokes from a "convincer/enforcer" to get it out. But never one that had split.

Just me, unless the manufacturer was going to do the labor on replacing the hitch or if had been out of warranty, I'd take a pencil grinder to the corners, reweld them and probably add a little on the backside, paint her up and go!

I agree with Tinner12002. If it is ONLY the outer collar, I'd have a competent welder (not a good buddy with a HF spark box) repair the collar and watch it for further problems. BUT: If the cracks extend into the receiver tube, "all bets are off" and I'd replace it, or have the manufacturer replace it.

If the hitch is under warranty, then I'd discuss it with CURT before doing any repairs, it may cause you to lose the option of getting a replacement hitch if you make any repairs.

To me, it's not a matter of whether it can be repaired, any metal item can, with enough effort and time, be welded to return it to functional status. It's more a matter of whether it "should be repaired" and who assumes liability for any future damage another failure might cause....

What is the hitch rated for and what are you pulling with it? What is the tow vehicle and it’s ratings? What is the trailer weight and tongue weight? What hitch are you using with the receiver? Is that a 2” receiver?

Class 4 it's 1200lb tounge weight. Towing a. 2015 keystone hideout 27dbs using an equilizer 4 pt hitch. Towing with a 2017 f150 3.5l with 2038 lb of payload. Trailer weight is 7800gvw which we are not close to the max with the short trips taken so far. No water other than a case a water and a 9 pack of Coors 16oz cans.

It seems the setup you have is within the ratings of the hitch. If it were on my truck I would replace the hitch with a new one. A good welder could grind out the material with the cracks and fix it but the hitches are not that expensive. I would also watch the new hitch very closely.

Square bar around the tubing what appears to be 3/8 fillet welds you can see it support the tubing from bending at the end if even that , it's more cosmetic appearance. I would not give it any concern.

Interesting that ETrailer ditched you. Anything and anybody can have problems. It's the support that really counts.

I agree. For around $200, it's peace of mind.

Curt is replacing on a good faith this one time and said I'm overloaded. I've asked to show me based on my trailer GVW that I'm overloaded. Hopefully this next one is quality and won't fail the same

Curt sort of pulled a CYA maneuver. At least they are sending another.
