If I remember right, once you get into Medium duty Ford trucks (F550) you can get the Cummins engine. In light duty trucks (F150-F450) Navistar (International) provided the engine until 2011 when Ford started producing their own engine.

From 2000 until about 2009 Ford used a couple different Cummins engines in their F550, both dialed down in torque and horsepower.

Current models of the Ford F450/F550 uses the same engine as the "smaller brothers". The engine, typical to all Ford "heavy duty applications" is tuned back from the "beat the competition" ratings used in the F250/350.

Horsepower: 330 @ 2600 rpm (6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel)
Torque: 750 @ 2000 rpm (6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel)

A far cry from the specs in the F250/F350.

Horsepower: 450 @ 2800 rpm (6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel)
Torque: 935 @ 1800 rpm (6.7L Power Stroke® Turbo Diesel)

The F650/F750 line use the same 6.7l Power Stroke with additional tuning for that application.

Think the lower tuning numbers for the work oriented trucks mean more longevity for the comerical application, if I am not mistaken.
After all my "Work Truck" is just a 485 Hp Cummins ISX with about 1300 FT/LB of torque. Mind you the GVW is 70,000

I also have the 6.4. I got it because had engines are about 1000lbs lighter than diesel. And 4x2 give you even more payload 3476 in mine. I have 4.10 gears also, so no problem pulling a 32bhs. Now based on the lower power of the gas engine over diesel, not sure I'll be doing any step grades in mountains.

Do the leg work, I have a Ford F250 with 3.73 gear ratio and I need to upgrade to 4.10 to pull 25RESWE loaded trailer. It says half-ton. but you would have to have the largest engine and lowest gear ratio for a F150 to work. Dodge should have tow charts, I know Ford did.

What year F250 and what engine? Yes it does make a difference. As an example, the truck with 3.73 gears and the 5.4L engine has significantly different tow ratings than the same truck with the 6.8L V-10. The current F250 with the 6.2L engine is different from either of those, so which year, which engine and which truck ??? BTW, 2x4 vs 4x4 also makes a difference.

Gagb, the 6.7 is about 1100 pounds wet and the 6.0 gas is about 620. (Ford's own figures)
