Countless Reasons to Camp

Our family has been enjoying camping in the great outdoors for generations with facilities next to nothing, to literal covered wagons, and now the most comfortable, evolving equipment and vehicles of our generation.
Sometimes it's about a destination; sometimes it's simply the journey or the people who are in or near our camp. Except for rare, urgent times when unexpected issues require independent support facilities, and even then, camping is usually about the peace and relaxation that is so comforting.

But wait, I'm preaching to the choir.

We have been enjoying our Cougar High Country 321 RES, pulled with a Ford F-350 crew cab with a long covered bed for extra gear and "necessities."

Welcome to the forum and I guarantee you'll find lots of useful tips and tricks, I sure have! I've also loved the outdoors since Ma 'n Pa wrangled up three boys and took us into the mountains where they slept in the little Shasta TT while we happily spent nights in a tent. Your covered wagon experiences is unique! My basic-as-you-can-get camping for a time was going "primitive" at Mountain Man black powder shooting events where we lived in a canvas wall tent, cooked over an open fire (after starting it with flint and steel) and I wore cotton shirts, fringed leather britches with suspenders and a wide brimmed hat. It was fun but a LOT of work, sometimes in the hot sun. We still go to Rendezvous and shoot our muzzle loaders, but it's mighty nice being "civilized" back at camp with a generator and AC!

Welcome to the forum from Georgia! We started out with us and two of our three kids in a Coachmen 198 in 1998 - so tiny! We got our first camper so that we could comfortably visit our middle child, who is profoundly mentally/emotionally disabled and whom we had moved to a full care developmental facility 4 hours away. We moved up to a succession of campers of all types and sizes (all towables) over the years - anything from larger travel trailers to a 5ver - even a PUP (what were we thinking??).

Our middle child still lives in the same care faciliity (fabulous place!), our other two are grown, so it's just us most of the time. We recently had our daughter and our 3 year old granddaughter join us at the beach, which was fun. Mind you, this was the same daughter who used to hate camping - too small and cramped, she used to complain. Amazing how "free" beach vacation changes one's mind - lol! Her husband hates the beach, so she was thrilled to be able to enjoy a few days of sun.

We appreciate your welcoming comments. Your camping history is enviable. The real primitive experiences are most memorable. Horse packing into wilderness areas with bare essentials for building fires in the wood stove to keep the tent warm and snow free while hunting tops the list.

Had a lot of the same experiences from tents to pop ups to travel trailers & now 5th wheels, from no hookups sleeping on the ground to full hookups, no more Navy showers or sleeping bags. Basically went from "camping" to "glamping" = glamorous camping & boy is it more comfortable. I could possibly sleep on the ground again, just not sure I could get back up. Don't miss ALL the work loading/unloading EVERYTHING in the vehicle twice, putting up tents, building fire pits, now unhook, connect, grab an adult beverage & enjoy.

Your reply rings a lot of happy bells. What a lot (sometimes hard work) of enjoyment has been earned and stored in those built in memory banks! Still, I bet the best is yet to come.

I'm sure they will. Mine have. It is always rewarding and comforting to be with and to uplift family members, away from all the pressures and distractions of day to day distractions. We enjoy the next generations' excitement as they plan and pursue places we shared
