Hitch capacity

Trailer:
Fuzion 310
Empty 12,065
GTW 16,500

Hitch:
Reese 16K

I will be using it for what it was designed for, no question.

Would you do it?

Dealer is pushing the 16K that they included in the price. I'm going to tell them 20K or I walk away.

Personally, i'm going to err on the side of caution, even if the hitch "should" be able to handle it, it's on the limit i'm sure.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

I think you have answered your own question. 16k would seem to be maxed out.

Dealer tried that on mine as well, I refused delivery until they changed the hitch.

If you think about it. It's pretty suicidal on their part. If they pushed it, and something were to happen, ultimately, they get hung.

I'm not a fiver guy, but to me the difference in price between the 16K and the 20K would be cheap insurance.

I would ask the dealer why he is pushing a hitch that in the event of the trailer being loaded to max, will be over the rating.

When we bought on 1st 5er the dealer wanted to put in a 16K, but I said got to be at least an 18K, dealer "Don't have an 18K, how about a 20K" I said "Sold" and very glad I did as our new 5er is pushing 17K.

Not sure who would "get hung" - you, the dealer or both should something happen. My guess it would be you since you accepted it (the 16K hitch) and you are ultimately responsible for ensuring that your vehicle and its towing fixtures are safe.

For that Fuzion I wouldn't be happy with anything less than 20K. As Bob pointed out..."Cheap insurance".

I think in my case they were looking at the keystone dry weight instead of the camper GVW. Mine showed a dry weight of around 14k versus a GVW of 18k. Granted that GVW is only valid if fully loaded but that's why I got a 20 instead of a 16.

I would go with the 20k to be on safe side it looks like you would be max it out if your fully loaded. Better to have to much than too little.

I wonder what the difference is structurally between the 16k hitch and the 20 K hitch

The Curt 16K and 20K hitches are two different animals. About the only thing that looks similar is the locking handle. The platform, plate, locking device are all different. I can't speak to the other brands of hitch, but with Curt, just a glance at the hitch will tell you the size. If it's got 4 legs, it's a 16K. The 20K really looks significantly stronger.

Thought I'd circle back and close this one out.

I ended up with a Husky Composite 10, 26K slider. That thing is beefy and quiet as hell, I guess I don't have to worry about overloading the hitch now.
