Changing oil in Genset

I have a question about changing the oil in my genset. Those of you that do it yourself, do you fill the new oil filter before you screw it on to help get the oil to the gen quicker or do you just screw on an empty filter and start up the gen?? I couldn't find anything stating I should or shouldn't, put oil in the filter first.
Thanks.

Always fill the filter with oil to prevent a dry startup. Can happen and will not be good for the bearings especially the top end of the engine, camshaft.

I'm not familiar with your generator, but if it's a vertical mount, yeah fill it first. Even a horizontal mount I'll put a little oil in it. You may be able to just turn it over after changing oil & filter. Pull the spark plug wires, etc. to let it turn over slower and have time to get oil in the upper end.

That's kind of what I was thinking also was to put a little oil in the filter or fill it up as much as I could it is a vertical Mount so it shouldn't be a messy process appreciate the responses
