Leaking compartment doors

2016 cougar .any ideas how the water gets past the rubber gasket on the pass through compartment doors the top of the hinge has been silicone the water always shows up on the inside lip. No sign of water in the inside. I am thinking about crawling in and shutting the door and have wife hose it down.

Do you have a drip rail/cap at the top of the door? If not, there are several styles available in metal or plastic and one of those should keep water off the hinge (assuming the hinge is at the top of your compartment door). Here's an example of one mounted over a window.

That’s a good way to find out what’s going on. I get water on the lip that is outside the seal but it doesn’t make it past the seal.

Yep crawl inside with a flashlight and have someone special it down. That's how I figured out my leak. It was leaking in through the mounting screws holding the frame of the door in. They were on the outside of the gasket.

I think my wife would think it was funny to lock me in there for awhile. My teenagers would definitely lock me in there!

Leaking compartment doors

The frame joint is at the top of the door frame and allows water to seep into the compartment. The fix is to seal the top of the hinge portion with silicone like shown in this photo:

Is this where you applied silicone? If yes, then the top of the frame may need to be re-sealed.

BTW: I found the leak path by crawling in and having the DW spray the area.

Number 4 Thanks for the picture. Do they make the caps where you dont have to use screws I am a little Leary of making holes in the fiberglass. The drip rail looks like a good idea. Thanks for the info.

The drip rail won't allow you to open the door fully and meet the magnet holder. I'm having the same issue. Visually mine looks sealed well across the top of the hinge/frame. What I don't like is the joint on the rubber seal is at the bottom of the frame...the joint/connection on the rubber makes more sense to be at the top. I'm having the dealer look at it next week. It's not good and a pain having water to dry up. During the storage season I pushed in foam rod around the door (available in different diameters, called backer rod) to hopefully keep any water out. I'll find out very soon how it did.

1 also use the lid from a large tote tub I believe it is the 18 gallon from Lowes .I fits perfectly underneath the lip in the inside of the compartment. So what little water does make it in goes inside the lid and does no damage. But I also hate the sight of the water no matter how little it is. Thanks for your reply.

I missed Steve's advice earlier. He is making a good point. The lower screws in the frame flange need to be sealed with silicone or water will leak into the compartment.

I must be missing something here .Are you talking about the screws on the inside of the door frame that are pointing on a angle toward the outside?I haven't found any others.there are 4 one in each corner of the framework.

Leaking compartment doors

Those are the ones.

EDIT: just checked mine. They are on the inside of the door frame so I was mistaken.

If water is leaking thru the screws on the inside of the frame it's doing damage to the exposed/cut wall material as well. The leak needs to be fixed from the outside not letting any water penetrate the walls. It's either the rubber seal that the door closes against or the seal between the metal frame and RV walls.

I am just about convinced that it is the gasket Everything else has been silicone can you order a new gasket from keystone or does it have to come from the dealer? Would it be covered under extended Warrentee?,Thanks for your patience.

My previous trailer had an intermittent leak in the front storage compartment. After a lot of investigation, I found it was coming from the side clearance light that was ahead of, and slightly higher than the compartment door. It was running back along the siding seam and dripping down from the door frame.
This was a aluminum sided trailer and may not apply to you.

A picture to clarify what I have. The passthrough storage doors are screwed in through the frame on the outside of the gasket.

If you look at the picture you'll see the screws that I have put a dab of caulk on. They are on the outside and water can collect on the outside of the frame and it leaks right in. I had a big puddle on my floor next to the bed from this.

Interesting, my frame has the screws on the inside lip.

As they should be. This is a terrible design, it's basically providing a path for water directly into the people tank. A guaranteed source of rot and water damage if left unsealed!

Nice pic Steve... I have the same RV with that same annoying joint on the bottom of the rubber seal I see how water could leak in thru those screws...water is always sitting there after a rain… real stupid design that will lead to serious damage. I'm or someonelse is going to remove those screws and silicon the holes/screws!
